If you've been reading the news lately (that is, if you can take it), you've probably read about a man in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley who lived the picture perfect family life, had a nice home, car and a great career but when things went sour for him he murdered his family then turned the gun on himself.
But the case of 45-year-old Karthik Rajaram is really an example of what I fear will become a series of economic desperation-based crimes that we will see as times get harder in coming years. ...
Now, to be clear, there's no actual evidence that overall hard times or great times are triggers of crime one way or the other. In fact, some of the most heinous crimes of our generation (i.e., Columbine High School, Heaven's Gate, Susan Smith) were committed when the economy was doing well.
But these are the toughest times many of us can remember and a lot of people in our generation are not equipped for this degree of turmoil, thus crimes like this one have a chance of becoming commonplace. Indeed this Los Angeles Times graph does suggest that higher incidents of murder did hit that area when unemployment went up, and that's not just in poor neighborhoods.
What that indicates is that certain areas, that are used to a particular standard of living based on an industry like aerospace or technology, will see more crime because of an inability to cope with the sudden downturn. In the case of Rajaram, depression set in after a job loss and his finances, hence his life took on a downward spiral.
Looking at his example, depression was most likely the biggest factor and he did the worst thing anyone can do in his situation: he panicked. We all get scared in times like this and when you don't know how you're going to pay your bills or feed your kids, it is easy to become irrational, but this is a case that clearly teaches one important lesson: whatever you do, don't lose it.
Instead, you're better off seeking help from various resources that are available for you before it's too late. There's help for people who are going through a rough patch, as this article suggests, and it's up to us to use our resources to get past these humps which we are all experiencing.
Look, I'm not naive enough to think that we shouldn't get scared or upset when we get a pinkslip, a foreclosure notice, or see our retirement fund tank. But desperate acts based on our grief, trust and believe me, are not the answer and will only serve to make matters worse and stir up more fear, which is the last thing we need.

Henry David Thoreau said "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them."
According to popular consensus, this is just the beginning. Apparently times like these were the great depression. And yet interestingly enough, the greatest number if millionaires were made during the great depression.
Great depression? I think not, more like the Great Opportunity to Prosper. It is true you are what you think. Looks like this guy just couldn't see a way out!

This is the beginning of the end, not just here but also in many nations around the world who have seen their economies taken down, with their banks failing and stock exchanges in limbo.
What the new economic system architecture might be is anyone's guess, but it won't be the same as what has been. Those days are gone.
One remedy which will have to be in place will be a complete uprooting of the hedge fund / derivatives trading schemes, and a severe limitation on selling stocks short (betting on the failure of a company or a downward stock value).
And, these various "virtual valuation" trading platforms, such debt swapping, and other instruments being used to represent some sort of mythical theoretical value as investment vehicles with leveraging ratios of 500 to one (or worse) - all of these exotic, ill fated experimental hybrid entities will have to be completely removed.
This will require stern, uncompromising regulatory oversight over all participants in our economic system, and a new set of laws that will not only strip away much of these experimental trading and valuation schemes, but also, provide for serious prison sentences in a maximum security federal penitentiary and forfeiture of all personal assets to be meted out to anyone caught violating such regulations and laws,
The party's over - we've got to get back to basics, fix our ailing economic system with new oversight and regulatory requirements, and have no mercy for those who attempt to "game the system" for their own personal gain.
As far as I'm concerned, the folks who engineered this current economic meltdown, while lining their own pockets with 100s of millions of dollars are self serving greedy scumbags, guilty of economic treason.
I say let's treat these folks as traitors, willing to sell anything to anyone, regardless of how corrupt or damaging their enterprises.

Out of desperation man took his life and the lives of his family and "joanne" writes...
"OUT WITH THE OLD...IN WITH THE NEW!"
You obviously don't realize that "You" are the old
"they" are the new! By "they" I mean Government, banks
and corporations.
The former things have passed away and there is now
a new form of government, one that "pimps" it's
citizens to gain it's wealth which they then distribute liberally among their "associates".
Associates who will do their part to insure...that their wealth continues to multiply at the expence of
it's citizens.
So in "your day" of desperation, when you find the things which served you no longer serve you and your
usual answers and solutions no longer address the
questions or the problems and those you look to help
you are indeed the "cause" and "effect" of your situations and circumstances, what will "YOU" do?
You may not "kill-off" your entire family as this man
did nor even take your own life. But still, what will
you do? You can't even fathom a situation or circumstance to make you consider such a thing, can you? It goes beyond your scope of reasoning, doesn't it? which makes you the ideal candidate for such a desperate measure! What? You thought it was "simple
minded" "uneducated", "underachievers", with no tenacity or "stick-to-it-ness" who are acting out in
desperation? Think again! And when you do, consider
yourself and others like you who won't hesitate to
retort at your demise.."OUT WITH THE OLD - IN WITH THE
NEW!"

First of all forget flip flopping anything is better then what we
got. A change is from someone that's been doing something the same
and we as people saying enough,I don't care who's in the white house
so long as it isn't a republican. People wake up every time their in
office they look out for each other. Both parties are full of crap
but at lease with the democratic party we don't have wars and
overspending to a point that rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
the whole economic system is built on the white pickett fence dream
only for you to work and keep the economy going. what do they have to
do to us before people start using there common sense unless your rich
politics are not for you anyway. Just remember your not taking going
to take any of this with you so why kill your self trying to live
materialistaclly in satans world wake up thank GOD and let him lead
your way stop trying to be the systamatic person that unless you were
born wealthy your just going to struggle keeping the system going for
other people sake. Stop talking me to death I got a soul to save and
it's my own. I just really wanted you all to notice the obvious when
911 happen bush was in a meetiing with 16 members of Osama bin laden
family. The reason we are not in Afganistan is because we are not
suppose to be bush made it that way he couldn't be there killing Osma
and doing his business deal to. He put osama family on a private plane
and sent them home and came and dealt with the american people after
is finished his busines. Hello! the man and his brother stole the
presidency election in our face slapped us and said kiss his
behind.and now his cousin his shoring up the rest of america's but
whipping. If they don't forgive our loans for mortgages then why
should america pay the bill and still loose your home anyway. What
does the bushes have to do to you before you do something different.
I walked down the street i fell in a whole its not my fault. I walk
down the same street fell in a whole it's not my fault. I did this
over and over until one day I walk down the same street and i walked
around the whole. It is my fault

Our banks are'nt failing because of bad loans or people buying more than they can afford. They are failing because everyone in position is stealing. You have people that make $22 million a year plus bonuses. What can a person do that is worth that much? How can you justify a severence of $400 million after filing bankruptcy? The little man is being penalized for the wrong doing of people in power. If we stop spending billions fighting a war that is truly none of our business we could have a surplus. I see no nation trying to help bail us out. I'm sure some country owes us something. Instead of punishing our main stream forcloseing our homes, how about collecting what is owed from these so called allies. It can't be that hard.

Times will be difficult. But those who built their entire identity around what they earn and what they own, will have a much more difficult time than those who have learned to use their own resources. We are strong people. Remember--After Katrina, volunteers, Salvation army, Red Cross came to help. The government was absent. After 9/11 our troops were sent to the wrong country. Americans volunteered to help clean up and care for the citizens of NYC,
It is us who make the government strong--through our labor, our tax dollars and through our willingness to participate in the ponzi scheme that is our financial system.---the government doesn't make us strong.
This time calls for keeping our heads, putting one foot in front of the other and waiting.....to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
