We all know that the majority of African American parents choose not to get married. But we also know that half of all American marriages end in divorce, which means that many people should never have gotten married in the first place. In this episode of "Financial Lovemaking", we determine whether or not African American men who choose to become "baby's daddies" are making a decision that is better, worse or different from those who choose to get married.
The rapper Diddy chose not to marry any of the mothers of his children, but it has cost him dearly.
Diddy Does it Up
Is this the Diddy we have all come to know and love? The year was 1997, and the event is the opening of Sean Comb's now defunct Justin's restaurant. With that baby face and ill-fitting suit, Diddy, then Puff Daddy, looks like a kid who's been playing in his father's closet.

A long-time player in the game called "hip hop mogul," Diddy played tough guy with fellow baller Jay-Z in 2000. They both look a little ashy. Is that a wash cloth is Comb's back pocket? Lord.

Continuing to try to keep it real, Diddy dated felow middle-class urbanite Jennifer Lopez in 2000. As Lopez rocked her fake Latina gang member do rag, Combs strutted the red carpet pretending to be a princely thug. The curved cap rim gave him away -- no thug would do that! Incidentally, this was around the time Combs and Lopez were arrested for involvement in a shoot out in a nightclub -- thug enough for ya?

Um. I don't know what to say here, except wrong, wrong, wrong and NEXT!!!! The year 2000 was a very bad year for the artist formerly known as Puffy's style sense.

Unfortunately, 2001 was also not a very good year. Puff hit the streets in the type of wide-legged baggy pants that should be reserved for a 'Fat Albert' character.

Always known as a great performer, Diddy took to the stage in 2002 to show the world that he is a devout Mets fan in head-to-toe gear. Still a little childish. Would Diddy's style ever transform?

Again modeling his look after a member of the 'Fat Albert' cast, poor Puff hit Fashion Week dressed like the bass player in the Junkyard Band in an over-sized Kangol hat. He was at a 2001 Jean-Paul Gaultier fashion show people!!!! SHM. But I can't talk. I would get an all-white suit immediately dirty.

Then, BAM! In 2003, Diddy made the change from fashion misfit to trendsetter. He filled out a little bit, and took to the runway of his own fashion show to take a bow in a well-cut suit. It's a little shiny, and the sleeves are short, but he looks good!

Continuing on a winning streak, Puff hit the 2003 MTV Movie Awards red carpet in a very mature linen suit, while sporting the super-dark sunglasses that he has worn since the beginning of his career. Most Scorpios love to cover the eyes which they say are the window to the soul. Or maybe they help block the paparazzi's glare.

In 2003, Diddy wore casual outifts without having to pull off a "thug" costume, as in earlier years. After the papes come, you can be effortlessly yourself. There go those shades again.

He pays tens of thousands each month in child support. While the actor Mel Gibson is being forced to give over half a billion dollars to his ex-wife of 28 years. Which is the better outcome - to pay for 18 years or to pay for the past 18 years all at once?

My Grandmother told me "no marriage ring and legit papers, tell him to "hit the road JACK!" I have lived by that code ever since!

This is a cop out....Bad men get end up with Bad women......
A bad men will play women in his youth..but when he get old...then he wants a good women to take care of him....it's too late then....because "what goes around comes around"....he gets a gold digger...that is waiting for him to die...
While in your youth...treat women nice and you will attract a good women...that both of you can grow together...and stick together thru good and bad times...
But some men (especially) men who come from a poor background...they don't know how to act when they get money and they are nasty, disrespectful,full-of-them selves and they abuse women and people around them....they feel women owe them something because of their success....
Then when they get old and can not do for themselves...then they become humble...but by then it is too late....

I think its truely sad that most choose to have baby mamas rather then a real marriage with a real family. It is even worse when women choose to be just a baby mama too.

I was married for 10 years, and I wish I had never done it. As women, we are trained to believe that marriage is always the best option, when it is not always right for everybody. If I could do it over again, I would have never married that man and I would have enjoyed my life.

Why are we even in someone"s business concerning whether they should get married or not. I think that when people feel that jumping the broom is the next step in a relationship then they will make that decision without the help of some idiots that do not even know them personally.

I agree with you. If this man wants to live life without marriage, then that's his right. You never see diddy going through the divorce drama that other people go through, do you?

To become a parent is a gift in itself, I personally feel everyone has a right to make that decision first and foremost. Second, I feel marriage is sacried and shouldnot be an act because kids are conceived out of wedlock. If women and men go back to the original truth, which is Marriage governed by Godly principles I know for a fact we willnot have a high rate of single family homes followed by divorces, just because we aren't happy. People in general need to work on a God fearing relationships and press toward a common goal together which will ultimately better a tomorrow for generations to come. Then if children are conceived they will be brought into this world with a TRUE purpose and common sense. Bottom line the beauty of making babies exist and is bottled up by unrealistic expectations from the partner involved. Yet at the end of the day not one thought was considered for that soul brought into this world.

It is frightening how much respect men have for their own babies...........NONE. Tells me they don't care much about themselves. The children growing up the same. With hurt and pain and low self esteem. Mental problems and all. Why doesn't daddy love me. Why are white babies worth their time, but not me............. It sends them an awful message. You are not worth it!. Sooooooooooo sad. It hurts them/us.
