Beyoncé's latest film, to be honest, reminds us that you don't have to be a great actress to take over the box office. I'm not trying to hate, but let's just say that Beyoncé is still growing when it comes to the big screen. But as a Finance Professor who gives grades on a daily basis, let me also say this: Beyoncé's got serious game when it comes to brand and money management.
In a recent interview, Beyonce explained how she doesn't spend money on luxury items, putting her in direct contrast with colleagues of her hip hop husband Jay-Z, who seem to think that taking baths in Cristal will keep your body clean. To Beyoncé, I must dish out a big, "You go girl", because the singer has learned that you can enjoy your wealth and protect that wealth, all at the same. Also, her father Matthew Knowles seems to realize the significant opportunity that comes from building a brand, managing that brand and expanding it around the world. In Finance and Marketing class, I give Beyoncé and Matthew an A+.
Beyoncé's latest film, 'Obsessed' starring Idris Elba (I still can't believe that Stringer Bell has a British accent in real life), dominated the box office, earning a whopping $28.5 million dollars during its first weekend. This outcome seems to have shocked some, including celebrity gossip columnist Lady Drama, who seems to feel that watching Beyoncé on screen is like going to a bad dentist with rusty drills and no pain killers.
Personally, I have to say that while Beyoncé may not be the most seasoned actress in the world, the fact is that most of her fans really don't care. Truth be told, great movies are not always built on great acting. Great basketball leagues are not usually built on great talent. The business of entertainment is built on one thing: the value and marketability of your brand. So, while there are those who might challenge Beyonce for her skillset, the truth is that her skills are second to none when it comes to building wealth in the Black community.
Beyoncé is sexy, but you probably know sexier women on your street. The difference is that Beyoncé has someone spending money convincing you that she's the sexiest woman on the planet.
Beyoncé is an amazing singer, but she is not the greatest singer in the world. Jennifer Hudson proved that to us in the movie "Dream Girls".
But beyond any doubt, Beyoncé is certainly this: an amazingly talented, singing-dancing-acting machine, whose value is carefully maintained by a delicate financial exercise on the part of corporate America. Fame like this doesn't happen by accident - Fame like this is MANUFACTURED.
Beyonce and Solange Fashion Transformation
In 2001, Destiny's Child won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Song for their hit single 'Say My Name.' Beyonce was 20 years old, and Solange was 15. New to superstardom, these young girls from Texas would take their time developing their sense of style.

Looking just like her mom Tina, Beyonce began her career with hair extensions based on braids, way before she would "upgrade" to lace-front wigs. Beyonce's mother's taste would continue to influence the her, as she would struggle to develop her own looks apart from her mother's sensibilities.

Working a strange mix of accessories, Beyonce used her ensemble to promote her self-penned hit 'Bootylicious.' We do what we must to reach the top! It was 2001, and still a few more years before Bey would cement her top spot without resorting to desperate fashion moves.

At the 2001 Teen Choice Awards, Beyonce and Solange fully evoked the over-the-top tacky look that became synonymous with their mother's style choices. Matching neon yellow outfits and braids in clashing shades of auburn were made worse by the wrong make-up colors. Having their mother as their stylist was quite the cross for B. and Solange to bear.

In outfits containing a range of colors in clothing, hair, make-up and accessories that defy my capacity for negative description, Solange and Beyonce attended the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards -- wearing more clothes designed by Tina Knowles. Need we say more?

As a teen, Solange grew up in the fast lane. Her braids, scarf, tee and jewelry were clothing any average girl would wear. As much as she needed to develop her sense of style as a star, Solange's deeper struggle would include developing an identity apart from her sister.

Solange and Beyonce posed together in 2002. This is an uncharacteristically dressed-down look for Bey. Do you think she still has that 'Michael Jackson's Thriller' shirt?

Through this two-tone hair sculpture in the form of a lace-front wig, Beyonce shows the world that they do indeed do things big in Texas at the 'Austin Powers In Goldmember' premiere in 2002. While Beyonce began to branch out into acting roles at this time and slightly mature in her sense of style, Solange still seemed like a non-entity totally dressed by Mom.

These two sisters made an appearance on MTV's 'TRL' in 2002 wearing distinctly different casual looks. While Beyonce took her relaxed dressing to a costume-like extreme, Solange still looked like a normal young person.

At the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, Bey gave a knockout performance and revealed what many would come to term the "Beyonce Look" in full force. The huge blond mane and over-the-top sexy outfits were here to stay.

So, Beyoncé's handlers probably go to bed with the same prayer each night:
1) That she doesn't get arrested for pimp-slapping Jay-Z after the Grammys.
2) There are no secret tapes out there in possession of a jealous ex-boyfriend.
3) That she never decides to engage in any form of righteous, yet controversial activism on any issue whatsoever (I've lost a lot of money for standing up on various issues myself).
If those prayers are answered, then Brand Beyoncé will be worth well over $1 Billion dollars before she is done. Given that she manages her money well, I expect to see Bey live to be a wealthy old woman. Hate on her acting if you want, but when it comes to getting rich, Beyoncé will always be Destiny's Child.

I believe that Beyonce was born to be a star. And thank God her parents realized it early and her father put every dime he had into paving a road to her success. However, her road was started, Beyonce worked hard and continued to build her self image, professionalism and industry experience and she continues to build on it.
One thing for sure, she is an entertainer and she knows how to use what God has blessed her with to keep the world eyes on her. She is just sexy enough, not too trashy and she continues to maintain that southern Christian up bringing. I like her down to earth humbleness.
There's Madonna and there’s Beyonce - two business showgirls enterprising machines. Go Girls.
I like Beyonce's music because she makes me dance and her movies are entertaining. COME ON - Lets give our SISTER a break and stop putting her down. I have not ever heard her speak negative about anyone. Remember - Beyonce – is a Super STARRRR Money Making Machine and she is our SISTER. Her age, her talent - No she will never go broke. All that I ask is that (all entertainers) they give back to the community. There is enough money - they can't take it all with them...
In America -- We have enough people in America that need help.

Beyonce has over 23 number 1 hits all over the world...Beyonce is certified 123 times platinum worldwide...Is a top five highest selling ringtones artist...Has sold over 130 million albums worldwide...Is the second highest paid musician and highest paid musician under 30... She was the first African American women to win the ASCAP Songwriter of The Year Award and the second female ever to do so...She was the first female artist to win International Artist Award (and the sixth artist to accomplish this feat)..She has won An Outstanding Contribution to the Arts Award (making her one of the youngest artist to ever win it)...She has had 3 number one albums domestically and internationally...Her last tour grossed 50 million...She has the second highest selling female clothing line(behind baby phat)...Has a top five selling perfume...And many other lucrative and successful endorsement deals...Beyonce placed 7th on Cove's top vocalist list of the past decades list (one place behind Whitney Houston...Beyonce made history by performing 3 times for President Barrack Obama....Beyonce has starred in 4 box office smash movies...Has won over 200 awards including 10 Grammys...She has many more accomplishments....Stop doubting this girl...Do I really need to keep going...I could write a 100 page book on accomplishments alone...She has been praised by everyone from Mariah Carey, Tina Turner, Quincey Jones, Patti Labelle, The Temptations, Kanye (who said she was a living legend), Stevie Wonder, Prince, Mary J, Michelle Obama, Barrack Obama, Bono, Monica, Mya, Jennifer Hudson, Lil Mama, Chris Martin, Nelson Madela, Oprah, Fergie, Justin Timberlake, etc etc...Beyonce steps her game up for herself...Not because of competition or biased hate from her fellow African Americans...Michelle and Barrack called Beyonce a ROLE MODEL...She grows and takes risk on all her projects....This is true artistry you are witnessing...She is versatile and controlled...And Jennifer Hudson can sing but she will never be as multi-dimensional as Beyonce...Jennifer Hudson has power and emotion but she lacks range and versatility...And Beyonce has range, power, and versatility but lacks emotion at times...All artist have strengths and weaknesses...J. Hud is not perfect either...Many people need to understand that Beyonce and J. Hud are both mezzo-sopranos..Jennifer is a dramatic mezzo-soprano and Beyonce is a lyric mezzo-sopranno...So, there are not many differences between their voices...She is 14 years in this game...And I am flabbergasted that you would ever compare a novice to a veteran... And she has had plenty of people compete with her but most lack the dedication and sheer will she has...Beyonce is a truly rare talent...Beyonce has earned the respect and admiration she has because she worked hard to accomplish them...You can take a lot of things away from Beyonce but you cannot take away her talent and dedication and contributions to music...ONLY TALENT CAN BRING THIS ABOUT AND NOTHING ELSE!
(sorry for long post and I am not re-reading this for grammatical errors...LOL)

The only reason her movie Obsessed came in at number one was because there wasn't much competition at the box office that weekend.
I have never understood the hype about Beyonce Knowles. There is nothing inspiring about her music or anything she does. She comes off as a self-absorbed primadonna. To me, I think she is put on a pedestal because of her looks and sex appeal. I think it is pretty sad that people mistake looks and the size of someone's bank account as talented. She is overexposed, over marketed and overrated to the max.
This woman never gives God the glory for anything. Everything she does down to her desperation for an Oscar to singing for the Obamas, is all about Beyonce being in the spotlight. It is not hate, it is an opinion.

I don't like Beyonce. People worship her because of her looks and money and she knows it.

Beyonce is sooooooooooo overexposed. What about some of our other talented sisters? Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson. They get so little face time, yet Bey is constantly shoved down our throats. I cannot take much more of her.

Another thing about her is that she may not be the best singer but her voice is different then singers with more soulful voices which makes her more marketable. She is able to crossover to all different genre's.

The fact that this young black woman has moved herself to level that she has is because of the love and support of her family and some proud fans; it is all a true blessing from our maker! Let us back her and not bring neg. vibes toward her and let other young girls be inspired by her,she is tops in my home....

You people have got to be kidding. Beyonce is not talented. I am sitting here laughing. You people need to get a life. Beyonce cannot sing or act. Jennifer Hudson sings better and is also a better actress. Beyonce is being used by Hollywood to make money. When someone else comes along she will be kicked to the curb. She has no education. Look at all the entertainers with no education. How far to they go with no financial backers or new business deals? Many gone broke before they hit 65. These people will not socialize with everyday people. I once went to many dinners with rich and wealthy African Americans. I noticed how the snubbed the poor and even there own. I knew these were not the people for me. Get a college degree, write down your plans for success, get a trade, start a business, etc. Stop giving these people your money. I go to concerts i like, not to follow the crowd. You people better start thinking for yourself. Beyonce would never fit in with the Elite. They consider someone that flaunts there body around a prositute. Because they are using her body to sell movies, and music. Alot of people have no respect for her and for good reason. Would you flaunt your daughter in the front of thousands half naked? No you wouldn't. There is money to be made in the music industry. But do you have to be half naked to sell it. No. Enough said.
