When Kanye West stood on NBC four years ago and said "George Bush doesn't care about black people," I applauded. When he acted a fool on stage after not receiving some award he deserved, I laughed. When he came out with that really weird CD after dealing with personal crises involving the loss of his mother and break up with his fiance, I sincerely felt for him (but never bought the album).
But after Kanye's stunt Sunday night on the MTV Video Music Awards, I wanted to slap him. Damn brother, that was just pathetic. When Beyonce told you she liked men with big egos, you surely put that theory to the test.
Kanye West's decision to bum rush the stage and yank the mike out of the hand of Taylor Swift, a 19-year old woman winning her first award has finally certified him as the jackass that everyone thought he might be. I have been a big supporter of West, and I still support him to a point. He brings some degree of intelligence to hip hop that the industry has needed for a long time. But the truth is that his actions last night were rooted in extreme selfishness and horribly arrogant behavior. Not good for Kanye, nor anyone else.
This must have been "The weekend the black folks went wild," because Serena Williams had an equally problematic outburst at the US Open. After a very bad call by one of the judges, Serena felt the need to offer to shove the ball down the "f*cking throat" of the woman for making her mistake. OK sistuh-girl, does the judge really need to have the ball shoved down her throat?
Serena's outburst didn't sicken me to the same extent as that of Kanye. Serena was in an incredibly tense situation, right at the end of a very important tournament and the judge made an incorrect call that could have cost her a major win. I sincerely felt for Serena, and I can't say that I would have risen above the temptation to offer the judge a tennis ball for lunch myself. But Serena must also be aware that there is going to be a huge financial cost to pay in terms of endorsements, suspensions and money lost from the US Open itself.
Kanye's tirade seems to be a publicity stunt gone bad. He is likely to lose money from his white fans, since there is the practical reality that many interpreted his actions as a black man assaulting a defenseless white woman. But let's be real: If Garth Brooks were to roll up on stage and yank an award out of Beyonce's hands, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King would rise from the grave for the inevitable entertainment race war. Oh yeah, Taylor Swift is also a country music "saynger," so I'm sure that the hillbillies have their guns cocked right now.
Serena has to simply keep her composure. She's not just an athlete, but a corporate brand and role model. Companies are not going to be interested in signing an athlete who appears to be unpredictable in her behavior. Also, while many of us can understand her choice of words, the truth is that the rest of the country does not. Most black women are creatures of class and dignity, and some wonder if Serena did a good job of carrying the torch. At the same time, black people are as heterogeneous as anyone else, so Serena does not represent every black woman in America.
I still love Serena and Venus Williams to death. Kanye's my boy, but he needs to go ahead and get that therapy. The world will soon grow impatient with Kanye and these outbursts are going to kill his short-lived career.

Kanye and Serena were an embarassment to all black people, Serena lost that match on purpose because she was getting beat and Kanye - he has no excuse, he has become a joke. And I know everyone is going to call the race card on Serena but lets be real, everyone went to see the Williams sisters, they were the best. The only color issue here is Serena's true color - poor loser.

I say hurray to Serena Williams; she added a little drama, color to an otherwise drab, white sport where personal expression is not permitted....To bounce a ball off a racket at 70 to 100 miles per hour is tedious and tiresome...just watching the sport, it is boring...so, what, she paid the price...being around all of those white spectators, white judges, white tennis players, you know there are all kinds of verbal insults lodged at her...who knows what this tennis official did before the camera's eye came on...we only saw the end result of something that occurred before....lmao....being around white people isn't that easy...especially when u have no other black brothers, black sisters helping you....backing you up....I don't see any single black football and basketball players trying to romance the sistah.....so, the outburst...lol

Serena's unsportmans-like, unlady-like behavior surprised me. Kanye's ignorant behavior did not. Both of these news generating peeps truly need to check themselves. As the saying goes: "you can take the person out of the ghetto, but you can't take the ghetto out of the person". Sad, sad, sad.

Black people are the only people in the history of the world who can not cry out in pain. No matter how outrageously, we are are disrespected, we must sublimate our righteous indignation and our horror.
Serena was robbed of her right to be judged fairly in one of the most important matches in her career. Her legacy, her dignity and her honor were abused in a blatantly sadistic manner. Both announcers said that no foot fault occurred; yet Serena is supposed to swallow this most foul injustice like the late great Jackie Robinson. Jackie paid the dues so that we would not have to endure the innumerable assaults on our personhood. Sojourner Truth, in seeking human dignity said, “Ain’t I a woman”. I ask today, ” Ain’t Serena a professional who should not be ripped off on the world stage?

I agree with you. Serena lost her temper, period. She was justifiably upset that an incorrect call was made. Her reaction was strong, but understandable. John McEnroe is and was famous (or should I say infamous?) for his temper tantrums, but never was he villified in the manner that Serena has been. A few days ago, an AOL reporter wrote an article about the lack of support the Williams sisters receive from their alleged fellow Americans. I, myself, witnessed the loud cheers for Kim Clijsters(sp?) even though it is the US Open and Serena was the American in the match.

I totally agree with Bomani Kyasa. I've always felt that generally speaking, both the commentators and the spectators have never wanted the Williams sisters to be the champions they are. Sport in America isn't going to be any less racist than in the rest of the society. In many cases it's even more overtly so. In England it's more subtle; a black footballer's strength and determination will be described as 'aggressive' whilst a white player will be labeled 'skillful'.
I didn't see any of this on TV but read that most of the crowd were cheering on Serena's opponent in this and the previous match - and even cheering when Serena lost a point. Whilst I wish Serena had dealt with it differently, I can't sit in judgment of her. After all, she's the one who has to face the same old thing, again and again. Much of white America is desperately sick and it’s going to take a damn miracle for them to cure themselves.

I am embarrassed by Kanye West's behavior and Serena Williams outburst. However, not as a black woman but as a human being watching someone act like a fool that hurt others - even themselves. Kanye West has behaved like an idiot and was never checked on it - so he kept pushing it. On the other hand, I was surprised by Serena Williams outburst her actions reminds me of John McEnroe who would go off if the wind blew just a bit more than he prefers. He would have a tantrum at almost every match and no one really bothered themselves too much - it was John being John (even having a commercial that played on his tantrum). We need to allow these celebrated people know when they have crossed the line and put a stop to it immediately regardless of race, gender, religious beliefs, etc. It's wrong and it is hurtful to others.

I am thankful for DawnKA's way of cutting to the very center of the truth of both Kanye and Serena's childish behavior this weekend. John McEnroe's behavior was just as childish and embarrassing to watch years ago. Her comments show that she looks past the color of anyones skin and speaks to the heart of the ugly actions of the rich and famous regardless of their color. That's the way we must all do to improve race relations in this country. Thank you DawnKA!
