It was only a matter of time before corporate America stepped in to make money off the trend. Meet the new drink on store shelves: Sippin Syrup. The drink doesn't use any illegal products, but produces the same "lean" effect that many young people seek from the cough syrup product on the street. Harmless enough, right? Not so fast.
Officers in the Houston area are concerned that the product sold on store shelves is nothing more than a gateway to an incredibly dangerous and addictive drug. The snazzy ad campaign fully leverages the power of the brand of "purple stuff" being sold on the streets already. Teenagers who can't get the real stuff would likely be enticed by the substitute until the door is open for the actual product.
I spoke with Dr. Elaina George, a prominent physician out of Atlanta, about the dangers of seemingly harmless purple "drank" used by many teenagers across the country after watching Lil Wayne videos (and those of other artists who promote the cough syrup mixture being sold illegally). Here is what she had to say about the symptoms:
"Short-term symptoms include Impaired judgment, nausea, loss of coordination, headache, vomiting, loss of consciousness, numbness of fingers and toes, abdominal pain, irregular heartbeat, aches, seizures, panic attacks, psychosis, euphoria, cold flashes, dizziness, and diarrhea."
Oh, I forgot to mention, the symptoms mentioned above are assuming your child doesn't become addicted. Here are the long-term symptoms in the advent of addiction:
"Restlessness, insomnia, high-blood pressure, coma, or even death."
I understand capitalist models and can almost appreciate the logic that leads companies to find even more ways to exploit ridiculous behavior in the black community. We are an intelligent and enlightened people, even if everyone can't see the light. But there is also the question regarding whether or not there should be regulations in place to stop companies from so blatantly utilizing an unhealthy trend to make a profit. What if my company went to Montana, where Crystal Meth is a serious problem and started to sell a product called "Meth Lite"? How fast would the Montana state legislature put me out of business?
When it comes to "Sippin Syrup," "drinking drank" and getting the "purple stuff," the bottom line is this: Companies should not be allowed to accelerate teen drug abuse and rappers should be conscientious enough to stop giving this drug free promotion. Teenagers are sheep who follow the examples which already exist in their culture. If we are making the bed for them, then who do we blame when they choose to sleep in it? The new drink in stores called "Sippin Syrup" needs to be taken off the market NOW.

I agree with paul on this one. "Drank" "Sippin Syrup" & "Lean" are all just carbonated beverages that provide a relaxing effect with natural products. They contain Rose Hips, Melatonin (which is naturally produced by our bodies), and Valerian Root which is used to treat mild cases of restlessness so its a slight drowser. Alcohol is out there and most teenagers are experimenting with it and it causes a lot worse effects. and the side effects of drank are just like anything else. There is a list of things that "can" happen but usually will not happen to most people. By the way Cocaine is back on the shelves again. These sort of drinks simply use the popularity behind the names to get the product out there. Drinking the energy drink cocaine did not make me wanna go snort some. Some people are gonna do the drugs no matter what, & parents play a big role in this. They can be involved in their child's life and set him/her/it(in the case of Lady Gaga) straight.

Alright! Way to make money off fear-mongering on your own people! I like how you displayed the effects of the drug promethozone and tried to play it off (either with your poor writing skills, or desire to mislead... unsure of which) as though Sippin Syrup was to blame. Of course, I am biased toward the drink as I consume one nearly every day. Did I mention I'm white?

Did you know that Red Bull is illegal to sell in numerous countries because it contains TRACE AMOUNTS OF COCAINE!: (source)http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/05/26/earlyshow/health/main5038914.shtml
I would think that as an African American, you would be happy that a company is marketing a safe and healthy alternative to a product that is destroying your youth and people.
Do some research on things before you go publically blasting like some self-denying easily-led media automaton. These products themselves ARE NOT dangerous, nor has ANY discernible research shown them to be gateway products. And just so you know, there is already a product on the market going after crystal meth users. Its called Tweaker. Do a little we searching and you'll find it.

man, the comments i've read on this article are unbelieveable. First you all bash this guy paul for giving his opinion. Second, you all commenting on how bad it is are just as bad, if not worse just for using the internet. Third, it's just life, we're all dying anyway. Quit writing articles on such trivial buisness and write about something worth while. I'ts like reading something a ten year old D.A.R.E. member would write. With that said, im done. -peace

I really think its too alarmist to suggest completely removing this stuff from the market. I don't think the name does have any purpose other than to draw attention and publicity. Sure it is some horrible side effects but those are practically negligible if consumed in the proper doses. Its not a companies fault if someone neglects to follow the instructions on the label. That would be like punishing a farmer for someone overeating. I do think that these are a tremendous idea though and honestly I am so thankful they exist because I have bipolar disorder and insomnia and this stuff is easily the most effective thing at calming me down that is easily available. I have very legitimate reasons why I will never ever touch prescription strength sleep medication again. Needless to say, I have almost died using them in recommended amounts more than I ever have from using non-prescription narcotics. I can barely feel over the counter stuff. If it werent for these drinks, I probably would have started self medicating with Percoset again because that was the only time I wasnt dangerously on edge. These drinks are amazing if used by anyone with the willingness to take 5 seconds and realize they arent buying codeine and then read a label and not drink too much of it. Is it really too much to ask people to exercise their common sense?
