New Credit Card Fees: Will You Be Charged For Good Credit Habits?

Comments (0)

Do you do everything you can to avoid credit card fees? Well, get ready to be penalized by major card issuing banks. In a recent 'Today Show' segment, it was revealed that many card holders may be subjected to new fees starting right away -- that penalize positive money management skills.

Why are credit card companies creating new fees? First of all, default rates are more than triple the norm. Plus in 2008, for the first time debit card use outpaced that of credit cards. Some say that the Federal Credit Card Law set to take effect in 2010 will cause these companies to lose big. Credit card companies plan to make back the revenue lost through these developments by gouging the disciplined consumer.

Different firms are rolling out an array of penalties. These new fees will apply if:

1. You pay your balance in full every month. Bank of America will be the first to pioneer this new form of highway robbery. They plan to charge up to $99 a year for the privilege of paying off your card monthly.
2. A money manager maintains a low balance. This means that a credit card holder will have to keep a high balance at all times in order to avoid fees. Citi Bank plans to charge a fee to card holders with balances below $2,400.
3. One has a credit card, but only uses it for emergencies or to maintain credit history. A new "inactivity" fee will be charged for NOT using their credit card to those noble souls with the self-discipline to live within their means.

This series of new credit card fees is appalling. On the one hand, American consumers are constantly chastised for bad credit management, and now credit issuers plan to charge good consumers for being good. But, you can protect yourself by carefully noting if and when you are charged for new fees, and questioning your credit card company about the charges. Then it is important to weigh the value of keeping the card against the new fees that may be imposed on you.
