The New York Times explains:
Up until recently, some wholesale clubs were skeptical poor people would be willing to pay the $50-a-year membership fee or would be interested in buying food in the bulk quantities for which the stores are famous.
But now, in this economy, stores are battling for every dollar and see a big potential market in the growing ranks of food-stamp recipients. From warehouse clubs to supermarkets and mom-and-pop groceries, stores are retraining their cashiers and hanging new signs to welcome such customers.
''Certainly this economy was a wake-up call,'' Costco chief financial officer Richard Galanti recently told investors. ''It is not just very low-end economic strata that are using these.''
... The U.S. Department of Agriculture said nearly 200,000 retailers nationwide now accept food stamps, 20 percent more than in 2005.
Executives at Costco are finding that poorer families are actually eager to pay the $50 dollar membership fee to take advantage of the fact that the company now accepts food stamps. And the retailer believes that poorer families will actually save more money in the end by buying in bulk, even if the initial investment seems high.
If you need to join the ranks of the 39 million Americans on food stamps (also known as Electronic Benefits Transfers), there is no reason to be ashamed. In fact, now is a better time than ever to seek out government assistance in buying food if you need it. The social stigma attached to food stamps is essentially gone as so many people are in need, and now more companies than ever are rising to meet the needs of this customer. You might be surprised to learn that you qualify.

Punky,
This is a serious depression. People need food to live, and we are giving people information they can use to help their families. No one should feel the stigma of being "stereotyped" when trying to best survive. To the ten million who have gone on food stamps in the past two years, these benefits are based on the taxes people have paid for years prior to needing the benefit. It's hardly a handout.
Of the 39 million people on food stamps, most of them are white. This article is not racial stereotyping -- you are. Perhaps you need to examine your conscience and why you would want to make people of any color feel bad for falling on hard times.

I could not have said that better myself. We are going through hard times and just because you get food stamps dont mean you are less of a person than anyone. If you peel of our skin we are the same color, so therefore what is the big deal? I get food stamps and at the present time am not working and have not worked for almost 2yrs now. When i was working i went with the truth and still got food stamps due to how much i was bringing home, and i have 3 children, and yes i get support for my kids, so there should be no shame on that. Thank you for your comment, keep it real. God bless!

Times are absolutely hard these days and no person deserves to go hungry. That's why when I go food shopping I can only afford to purchase the bare essentials and have to deny myself the little extras like cookies and soda. Food stamp recipients, however, are not restricted when it comes to such items.

I wish I could receive food stamps, as many tax dollars that have been taken from my pay checks the 27 yrs I have worked. I would gladly utilize my "GOLD CARD" with help high and mighty proud, screw a sterotype, it would be my benefit. But of course with my way of thinking here, to plain and simple, I would never receive them, too much like right!

...I must agree with Punkycolour....the folx I have seen that receive FS, have a cart full of luxuries....such as JUMBO SHRIMP (fresh)....T-BONE STEAKS. KING ALASKAN CRAB LEGS. I have to buget and get 10 for 10.00 items. It is rather disturbing to see such. My daughter worked as a check out girl when in HS, and she would tell me, many of the folx that would come thru her line would have 600.00 limits!!!! Now c'mon. Surely the oldest child in the house would be what 18. I dunno. Just thinking age to amts of food...then on down to smallr children. Eating that high on the hog??? Thats alot of money for food each month. They need to teach budgeting....LIKE MOST OF US HARD WORKING AMERCIANS DO. CUT THE SNACKS AND SODA, AND THE TOP GRADE BEEF AND SEAFOOD. GET IMITATION CRAB LIKE I DO...

Hey.
You misread it. She cant get wic because her blood levels are high.I agree with you. I am grateful but i believe this is much for an adult and a two year old.Imagine how much the people with 10 kids get.I don't work. I am a full time college student. My daughters father works and supports us. A person only receiving food stamps, with no income and one child,in Nyc will get 367.If we were married then they would base it off of his income and we would get less. Its crazy the way its ran.

That is so true. I live in NYC. I get 367 dollars a month for me and my two year old daughter. I cant get wic, her hemoglobin is high. I may be short of cash from time to time but never on food.
