We all know that Tiger Woods is an incredibly powerful brand. You may also know that he has earned over a billion dollars in his career, and that he is wealthy beyond imagination. Wealth buys a lot of things that we're not supposed to be able to buy, like a carefully protected image, where every reporter with dirt on you is afraid to share it, and media outlets protect you out of fear of losing valuable corporate sponsors. Tiger has it all.
The problem for Tiger Woods, however, is that his PR team has failed him thus far. Tiger Woods lost $10 million dollars the minute his wife came out of the house with a golf club in her hands, and no one was able to explain it. Now, one can't say that she came out of the house with ill intent, but the truth is that this doesn't look good.
Here are some quick points that Team Tiger must consider when crafting their next move in this complicated situation:
1) Take a note from David Letterman: In America, the truth sets you free. Conversely, we remain slaves to that which is perceived to be deceitful. By being so stoic, Tiger Woods is doing himself no favors, and the public will ultimately get angry.
2) Tiger can conquer the world, but he can't control it: Tiger Woods can demand that the world allow him to have privacy in his personal affairs, but the truth is that Woods has earned over a billion dollars by asking for the public's attention. You can't turn your fame on and off like a faucet.
3) Making a deal with the devil: Tiger Woods was labeled to be squeaky clean and he gets paid as if he were squeaky clean. The big problem is that when the world finds out that you are only human, it's going to cost you. Tiger is not quite the endorsement steal that he used to be, but he was probably never as perfect as his sponsors pretended that he was. In some ways, this might be a liberating experience for Tiger Woods.
4) Sports can't quite conquer all: Tiger has earned roughly 10 percent of his billion dollar fortune playing golf. The rest has been earned with appearances, endorsements and other extra perks. So, the idea that Tiger can simply win on the golf course and make this all go away might be a bit flawed. The rules of financial gravity change when you are the greatest golfer that the world has ever seen.
5) Welcome to the real world Tiger Woods: Tiger Woods, a man accustomed to dominating his environment and kicking people out of his circle for misbehaving, may not have been cut out for marriage. He has been focused on his life-long goal of 18 major championships since he was five years old. The real world doesn't let you control every aspect of your existence, and Tiger must now face the reality that the closest person in his circle has helped him to embarrass himself. In the world of marriage, things are almost never as sheltered and perfect as Tiger might want them to be. That is the reality Woods must now face.

well stated and extremely valid points. i find it very interesting that athletes, actors, etc. want to be public figures when they want to be and go back to being private citizen nobodies when it's convenient for them.

Their are few valid points in this article. I find the way that we as a people rush to judge at the media's request extremely disconcerting. Black men in this country are constantly being demonized, especially when they have a white woman on their arm - the media and the racist that govern them are just looking for the next O.J. and its appalling that some individuals are so blinded by propoganda and senstionalism that they can't see the truth.

Re: Oneil saying we "can't see the truth."
What is the truth? We do not yet know. But, here is what we do know. Early last week, "rumors" surfaced that Tiger Woods may be having an affair. Then, at the end of the same week, Tiger drives out of his own driveway (as he has many times before) and crashes into two stationary objects - a fire hydrant and then a tree. Next, his wife comes out of the house with a golf club and smashes the windows. The hospital says Tiger was not intoxicated. That's what we know.
What is the truth? I have an idea, but, I do not "know" that it is the truth. [Yet.]

This article is clearly out of line. There is no substantiation that the accident will cost Tiger Woods anything. It is pure conjecture.
It is also pure conjecture that Tiger Woods is anything but "squeaky clean". There is no actual evidence that any problems actually exist in the Woods' household. The writer is way off base in inferring that there is without substantiation.
What the future will bring is something else. I there is cause then the article should have been written when the cause is established.
The writer here is establishing cause without substantiation. It is irresponsible journalism. I used to have some respect for Mr. Watkins but now I see that he is only trying, through sensationalism, to establish himself as a public figure. If I were Syracuse University I would seek to divest myself of this person. His integrity is in question.

TIGER TIGER TIGER
This article is on point....
The minute Becky came running out of the house swangin' that golf club it was on and poppin'...and yes his PR team has failed him miserably...and now this thing CANNOT BE PRIVATE....when husband and wife have a fight, it's suppose to be private.....but not this time...and not in this case....
I never thought of Tiger as perfect...never think about him much really....i'm not a golf fan...but now that he's in the news...well...
As for the millions or billions he's received from endorsements...i guess they're all gonna start cutting him off especially now that other BECKYS are coming out of the woodwork....
BROTHAS JUST DON'T LEARN....BUT THIS WILL LEARN YA TIGER....STAY OUTTA WHITE FOLK BACKYARD...I ALWAYS SAY!!!!
brothas run to other races, but it looks like the brothas aint making it with them either. I'm glad he did not get physical with her because those white cops would have his black ass under the jail house by now...
IF THE WIFE WAS A SISTA, THE MEDIA AND THE POLICE WOULD NOT BE GOING CRAZY TRYING TO MAKE HIM TALK.....THEY WOULDN'T GIVE A FLYING FUGG....IT'S ONLY BECAUSE SHE'S A BECKY.....AND EVERYBODY IS HAVING FLASHBACKS OF O.J. SIMPSON.
This is sad all around...Tiger is a Brotha....a mixed brotha....but a Brotha nonetheless.....and once a Brotha have a problem with a Becky, you aint just a brotha now, you just a N****....
And let's not forget, Tiger (a Brotha), is the greatest golfer ever, and people are jealous....
and now another high profile brotha is being brought down and it's sad...just plain sad!!!!
go to AFIELDNEGRO.COM and check out the brothas and their BECKYs.

Why is it that an OJ or a Tiger only becomes Black to us during adversity, kind of like finding Jesus on your deathbed? This guy was playing fast & loose with the "Big Dogs" (or white men), doing what I am sure most golfers on the circuit do. What he failed to take into consideration when he was presented with a perfectly good white girl to marry by his Swedish golfing buddy (you see how pissed off that white man was?! Ha!), was that his free pass into their rarified world was based on his silent promise to "behave himself" and act like a good little negro. Add to that the arrogance of his carelessness and you have one flaming fallen "hero". Can't say I'll cry for Tiger, but I think when all is said and done he's gonna know exactly what part of "Cau-Bl-In-Asian" applies to his Black you-know-what. THAT, will make me truly sad, indeed.
