Foreclosures are affecting millions of Americans, and the black community has been hit especially hard by this crisis due to predatory lending practices. But, foreclosures are not only a threat to persons and families who own homes. Many churches are also suffering from the negative effects of the mortgage system collapse, with black churches in particular being threatened at an alarming rate. Jesse Jackson and other leaders are now leading an attack on the banks that took and paid back bail out funds, yet are still refusing to extend a similar helping hand to churches and homeowners needing a break. The Washington Post reports:After being bailed out by the government, many banks have repaid the Treasury Department and continue to conduct business as usual instead of offering help to people in danger of losing their homes, Jackson said.
"It was determined that if Wall Street collapsed, the entire economy would sink into the ocean," Jackson said. "It was the right thing to bail them out. It was the wrong thing for them to not link to reinvesting in America and . . . restructuring loans for homes, churches and students."
The meeting was held at Ebenezer AME Church in Fort Washington, where the Rev. Grainger Browning spoke of the battle that the 10,000-member congregation recently waged to save its sanctuary.
The church had never missed a mortgage payment, but its lender suddenly demanded that it keep $750,000 in reserve, Browning said. "We had to raise $500,000 in three months," he said.
Browning said he was told by bank officials that they had no choice but to take the action because of the economy. But he said the bank "stepped back" and gave the church more time to deal with the situation after Jackson interceded.
But Jackson said other churches and individuals were not given second chances by the same institutions that were provided billions of dollars in the government bailout.
Jackson plans to protest banks that have been refusing to help its troubled mortgage holders, and to pressure Attorney General Eric Holder to go after banks that have violated predatory lending prevention laws.
In the Washington Post article, a church leader is quoted as saying: "The church is the only institution that people of color own, lock stock and barrel, and the banks know that... If they can take that away, we have a problem more serious than the economy." It would truly be a sad day in America if the souring economy could take away not only people's homes, but the very structures that provide nourishment for the soul.

Congratulation Mr. Jackson!
Washington can spin anyway they want but the real fact is our economy is not getting better. Housing is not picking up, new houses are not being built. Interest rates will rise and inflation will be rampant within one year. I predict prime interest at 7% or greater and inflation to be near 10% and both rising with no end in site.
You do not print over a trillion new dollar bills and not have inflation and higher interest.
Washington also knows that and that is the reason all the bankers and politicians are lining their pockets. They know tough times are ahead.
Expose and AUDIT THESE BANKSTER!

I commend Jackson for addressing this matter. I believe that a lot of people, African-American and otherwise, were just deceived and tricked. I just don't see how so many people are losing their houses and something shady wasn't going on throughout the industry. There are a lot of things that are coming to light that these banks were doing that is just plain wrong. While the African-American community is being hit hard I just think that is more about another color....green.

Jesse Jackson - I agree with you. It's time to hit the streets and protest. It's the only tactic in our ongoing struggle that ever really worked. Must do much better with the placards though - that's one sorry looking placard you're carrying.

I have seen this with my own eyes. I use to be a loan officer and yes most people, black, white, or whoever were tricked and not told the truth about the mortgage loans they were getting. I remember one of my customers in total tears because she didn't realize that she had an ARM rate until she got the notice in the mail that her rate was about to increase. Thank god, I got everything together for her, but there are so many people that didn't get any help, and the banks are still not helping anyone. I just don't know if the mortgage mess will ever heal.

I said to a group of pastors years ago that they should have a business directory for their members who are in business and encourage their members to patronize those businesses and to support Black business in general. I told them that when the Black community suffer financially due to unemployment etc. The church would feel the effect Well that day is here. It's a sad thing to say that all we own is churches. Why don't we turn some of these churches into warehouses and a place to maufacture products so Blacks can have job. After all we have more than a soul to nourish. It looks bad on the churches when most of their members are broke and struggling, have no savings for themselves while paying 10% of their gross income to a church who is not concerned about the wellfare of its members or the community. The only salvation for Blacks is build businesses and support Black businesses. Jobs comes from businessess. 95% of other races work for businessess owned by people of their race while 95% of blacks work for others and since most races employ their own race first--then what is the solution. Wake up Black pastors and Black peopleand "Think outside the box." Our next generation is dependent on a tomorrow that will be the results of the decisions we make today. Yes, let's fight to save real estate because we can use the equity from our churches to build factories and produce products that Blacks use on a daily basis. remember, if the pastor stood over his pulpit and told all his members to support these industries look what would happen to the economic of the Black community. What if every mega church supported a beauty supply & wig shop business, one of its members could do well in that business and could employ some of their members? Simple but makes sense. There is non one coming to rescue Blacks and we should know that by now. I think that it would be more beneficial for Rev. Jackson and the mega ministeries to march, fight and apply pressure on our politicians to push for "Reparation" for Blacks and NOW! Blacks are too far behind to catch up without some outside help. And last but not least, how many jobs has Rev. Jessie Jackson created for Blacks and what businesses has he patronized this year? I am fed up and sick and tired of being sick and tired of Blacks not making the main thing the main thing--Do for self.

Please think black America where is the man who came to our churches and wanted our support? Where is he in saving the black santcuary?
When people want our vote that have outward characteristics that are similar to ours, do they run to us for support? Now we need you Obama to step up and make the banks accountable to the black community, the churches, the homeowners, the black students trying to attend college? Where are you?
