But when I received an email telling me that Montel is now doing commercials for Money Mutual, a company that offers short-term loans with no credit check, I found that to be quite interesting.
No, Montel is not a crook. And neither are Magic Johnson and Russell Simmons, two other people who have loaned their names to companies (Rent-a-Center and The Rush Card) that want to give us access to capital. Instead, they are pure, hardcore capitalists: individuals who are willing to endorse the idea of charging you a very high price to give you something you very desperately need. Many people in America right now are cash poor: they don't have bank accounts, or their financial literacy is low and they have trouble making it from paycheck to paycheck. Then Russell, Magic and Montel come along touting products that help people to solve their problems, the same way that a Good Samaritan offers a thirsty man a drink.
The challenge, however, is that one has to wonder if it is right to offer the thirsty man a drink for $50 dollars? Should we take advantage of the fact that he needs water in order to live or does that make us exploitative? All the while, even if we charge the man $50 dollars for his drink, we can still argue that we are helping him out. That is the dilemma of payday loan companies and those who endorse them: they charge incredibly high interest rates to people who really need the money and may not necessarily be able to understand the fine print.
Magic Johnson, Montel Williams and Russell Simmons can sell these products mainly because they are brown skinned, easily-recognized figures in urban America. Let's be clear: they are selling these products to people who are often poor and Latino or black. Increasingly members of all communities are in need of such expensive loan products. Should we be offended by their actions and activities? It depends on where you stand.
Personally, I'd like to see another brown-skinned person get involved: Barack Obama. President Obama, in the midst of his quest for stronger consumer protection laws, should create competition for companies that are accused of imposing usurious interest rates on the poor in exchange for helping them receive basic banking and access to capital. He should impose stronger laws to keep companies from earning a profit that exceeds that which should be earned in a competitive market. He should support programs to increase financial literacy within urban communities and nation-wide, so that consumers know they have a choice.
It's OK for these guys to go out and make their money, but unregulated capitalism in poor communities is almost never a good thing. Perhaps their collective conscience will kick in and get them to reconsider, but I seriously doubt that will happen. That's why President Obama needs to step in.

Talk about profiling!! I am a 51 year old, disabled, single father of two young daughters. I had a very good job as an Asst. Chief of a medium sized towns fire dept. Because of blood clots, I was forced out on disability. Two weeks later my wife walked out to move in with her boyfriend, leaving me with our two daughters. I am white and educated. I am not financially illiterate and definitely not stupid. I get one disability check on the third of every month. By the time the house payment is made, insurance, doctors, medications, etc is made, the check is gone. That leaves the rest of the month. I do not get any state support. No food stamp, welfare, etc.
There are times that things are NEEDED and I don't have the money for them. My girls don't wear designer clothes, we get the cheap stuff on sale at Walmart. Right now, I am sitting here with $4 in the bank and just a few groceries. I don't have anything else to sell. So, can you loan me a few bucks so that I don't have to go to a small loan company? Or do I just tell my daughters that they don't eat until the 3rd of next month?

I thought of a long response but decided that it was not worth the effort. I am a well educated woman. I have never been in severe financial hardship until this past year. Your response is clearly from someone who has never known true poverty or even possible financial distress. You need to wake up and take a good look outside your comfort zone and recognize the reality of the world around you.

Montel has always been about the $$$. He's also endorsing a juicer/blender on TV and in magazines.
I’m unfamiliar with these products, so it’s important that you read up on them, as well as read between the lines. Even the celebrities are money hungry these days and will lead their name to anything.

Montel probably does not even have MS. Wonder if he gets a cut of the donations? People as a whole want to believe that man is inheritly good. I want to believe it. However history has taught us otherwise. It has nothing to do with race or anything else. You sit a pile of cash down in front of someone(including priests, nuns, police, presidents, yo mama etc. and you watch the end result. Mom? A.... . . .mom? MOMMA!!!!!

Dr. Watkins,
Your face looks black but I often wonder about your soul. Why is it that your comments always seem to undermine. Why is it that we are expect ting so much more of Obama then we have demanded of anyone else?

Why not expect something from the President? After all, he is their because of a Black man that had a dream. When you say, "You have to help all the people," true and I understand what you're saying but, balancing the eqation with Black Folks should be one of his priorites. Even Bill Clinton said, "The one thing he wished he'd have had time to do was to close the gap between the haves and the have nots before he left office," and he AIN'T even Black genetically anyway. Why wouldn't we expect more from President Obama? He might not be able to give us our 40 acres and a mule but, he should give us something. I voted for him, still believe in him but, these people are exploiting us. Magic Johnson giving us RENT-A-CENTER (RAC) which charges a fortune. Example: A TV in a store costing you $500 dollars would be about $2,000 once paid for through (RAC). Montels informercial, doesn't tell you that when you put in your information, 50 to 100 email will follow. Russell Simmons card is no different from Walmart or any other debit card and you pay to load them all if your debit cards that isn't with a bank account. There's nothing that they're doing to really help us but to fatten their pockets. Black and Hispanics, "Wake Up."

How utterly predictable to question the man's blackness when he doesn't speak the party line. Pathetic.

President Obama promised to impose banking regulations as part of the pitch for bailing out the banks. I am a huge supporter and agree with this author that he must step in to regulate how these banks lend and what they charge to do so. It makes perfect sense that a high-risk loan (which, obviously, these are) would incur higher interest rates - however, these services are at rates akin to loan sharking - which, of course, is illegal. Are these not because they have incorporated? We need to seriously think about that.
Again, it comes down to education - if the individuals desperate enough for this up-front money had choices and understood their options, companies like these would not survive - regardless of the "think about themselves only" endorsers.
Oh, and by the way, is anyone else sick of reading commercials on these blogs?
