'The Little Black Book of Success: Laws of Leadership for Black Women' - Business Book Review

In the recently released 'The Little Black Book of Success: Laws of Leadership for Black Women,' Elaine Meryl Brown, Marsha Haygood, and Rhonda Joy Mclean, provide valuable insight and advice to black women about navigating the sometimes confusing and oftentimes prejudicial world of corporate America. As black women who have held leadership positions in large, well-known corporations, 'The Little Black Book' is based on their combined years of corporate experience and addresses issues that many black female professionals can relate to (and some that an African American man like me can relate to as well).

What separates 'The Little Black Book' from the thousands of other books about leadership and making it in the corporate world is its focus on issues unique to the black experience. The authors don't simply lecture to black women and tell them to mimic their white counterparts, and they also don't attempt to tell black women to discard all of the cultural characteristics that make them unique. The authors use numerous examples of interaction in the workplace to demonstrate how black women can balance being successful in the workplace with maintaining a mentally healthy and positive image of themselves as black women.

One way in which they do this is to address a fact that is obvious to those of us who work or have worked in corporate America, which is that it is still a very racially-discriminatory and sexist place. They reference data and surveys that show how deeply embedded various prejudices are in the business world, even among whites who would self-identify as being "color-blind" and accepting of all people. The authors don't cite this information to make "excuses" for black women not being successful; it simply lets black women who are struggling in an oftentimes hostile environment know that they are not "crazy", and that even when they perform at a high-level and exhibit the most business-appropriate behavior, they may still be met with a variety of obstacles based on the blatant or subconscious prejudice and ignorance of others.

In addition to addressing the various obstacles that black women may face in the workplace, the authors also provide useful tips relating to networking, seeking out mentors, appropriate workplace discussion, assertiveness, and not only believing, but knowing that they deserve to be where they are as much as anyone else.

Given that they are speaking largely from their personal experiences and information shared with them by others, every issue that the authors address may not be applicable to all; however, there is plenty here that will be of benefit to many black women in the corporate workplace. For other workers -- if you take issue with the idea of conforming behavior and assimilating into a business environment, then the corporate world is probably not the ideal place for you to begin with.

The 'Little Black Book of Success' provides valuable advice from black women who are successfully living the corporate experience. It addresses the obstacles that other black women (and men) will likely face, yet also provides practical advice to black women on how to navigate the corporate environment. You can't really ask for more in a modern business book that urges African American women to strive hard while dealing with obstacles that are very real.
