With all the intense scrutiny on Arizona for its harsh anti-immigration legislation, the time has come to address the relationship between the black community and the Latino community. In this video, Dr. Boyce Watkins discusses this issue in depth with his friend and colleague professor Alan Aja. An expert on Latino studies, Aja uses his personal experiences as a Hispanic man, in addition to his academic expertise, to illuminate the topic. How will blacks and Latinos navigate the racial boundaries that unite us yet make us very distinct as groups? What do African Americans really need to understand about the issue of immigration?
Watch Dr. Boyce Watkins on AOL Black Voices now -- and leave your thoughts on black-Latino relations below!
AMEN. These people are so proud of where they come from and who they are yet they were so quick to abandon mexico and come here and leech off of Americans! Who they hate by the way.
What is it you don't get about illegal? It is illegal for a minor to purchase tobacco. It is illegal to be in this country without proper papers? It really is that simple.
The primary points black people need to remember re. the immigration issues are; 1.there are more hispanics than blacks in the US and their numbers are growing 2.Hispanic culture and mores are vastly different from that of blacks 3.There are a only a finite number of jobs avail- able at any given point in time---blacks and hispanics are COMPETING w/each other as well as other ethnic groups for these limited jobs 4.Ethnic/racial pride requires hispanics to first look out for each other, not blacks
If black people believe illegal immigration doesn't affect them directly and negatively they're uninformed or delusional
This is the truth, you said it all . it hurt me really bad the during an immigration rally in los angeles Blacks were shoulder to shoulder with Latinos while at the same time latinos had declared war on blacks.
I am Hispanic Cuban and I support 100% what you wrote but if you think in the situation of the legal people here in USA, citizens by naturalization, like me it is not different of the situation of the Afro American community low income in USA. I like to support what the black people is doing even when I am brown or Hispanic. However, I understand that I am minority. But, you find some Puerto Ricans that they said in the Latino community, we are Puerto Ricans not Afro American. You find some Cubans that they said we are Cuban from Miami not Afro American. However, for me all those people that they think in that way, they are not real educated people even when many of them speak very well English, because they live here for long time but they can not understand why they are living in the place that they are living and why they are having serious hard time to raise a family even when they are legal here. Now, the situation about immigration can change if we close the border and minorities and white people that believe that inclussion is good, we work together in change this country, but I can not understand why Mexico can not take care of 100 million people and sent that people here being short, poor and without any education, it is another form of prejudice because the people in Mexico they are racists with the Indian population, short and dark brown. Even me, that I am Hispanic citizen, I am not happy with support ilegal immigration for the fact that the job that the ilegal immigration is doing is the job that the first generation of refugees and legal people from all over the world they are ready to do when they are here without think in return, like we see in the illegal population, many of them are working here but they are trying to return back in a few years with some money. I don't care if people refugees, black Muslims, Cubans or Puerto Ricans, or from all over the world came here legal to stay forever, but what I am saying if you came here legal, you are supposed to be doing something productive to take care of your family first and later support with tax the government. The problem it is the same for all the groups. White people in power has been ussing the ilegal population to stop the economic progress in the minority population legal and for that reason we have low income people that the only thing that they can do is paid the tax for the government first even when they are poor and they can not save money in a saving account. It is another kind of economic prejudice. I can not do anything for ilegal workers in USA when they are taking the place of the population that has been in jail but anyone like to help them and they go back to jail for the same reason, not job and not money. I think the people with real pain confronting the lack of productivity and economic sucess in USA they are Afro American people low income, new refugees not matter what race, Cubans and Puerto Ricans first generation here and others Hispanic with status legal in the country. Those people most of them are paying tax for the government but they can not keep a saving account with some amount of money incrasing every year. We have to spend the money to survive every year, we have to share our freedom and schedule to work full times with ilegal people. Some black people and Latino people that understand they are minority can work together with white people also that understand what mean be low income in America in rebuild a new society. Now most of the people in the white community they never has been losing anything that the ilegal people took away.
The data that is used regarding the number of hispanic in the US is the census data. With the ILLEGAL population as transient as it is I don't believe there are adequate safeguards in place regarding the census to ensure that each ILLEGAL is only counted once. I believe that ILLEGALS should be precluded from the census and that each person counted should be required to produce a valid social security card so that we can get an accurate count

ILLEGALS are included in Census data. I believe that non-citizens should be precluded from the census data
