With all the intense scrutiny on Arizona for its harsh anti-immigration legislation, the time has come to address the relationship between the black community and the Latino community. In this video, Dr. Boyce Watkins discusses this issue in depth with his friend and colleague professor Alan Aja. An expert on Latino studies, Aja uses his personal experiences as a Hispanic man, in addition to his academic expertise, to illuminate the topic. How will blacks and Latinos navigate the racial boundaries that unite us yet make us very distinct as groups? What do African Americans really need to understand about the issue of immigration?
Watch Dr. Boyce Watkins on AOL Black Voices now -- and leave your thoughts on black-Latino relations below!
Boyce, I'm very proud of you. I am Mawiyah's mother the carpenter and contractor. I have since returned to school in the graduate degree program in IT support.
Supporting illegals is the new Jim Crow of segregation. The sign use to read whites only need to apply. Now it reads only bi-lingual in Spanish need to apply. What is the percentage of legal americans, who can speak and write Spanish and who are non/Hispanic descent, pretty high. That leaves no competition for illegals and their legal spanish speaking families to occupy Jobs,we should get.
I applaud your efforts along with Professor AJA to inform and educate us about The Black - Latino Relations.
As Malcom X taught us race prejudice is really ignorance. It's going to take the educators to have such discussions to teach each group of our diffrences but more importantly our similarities. We all belong to one race that is the human race. As Jesus tells us: "Love Your Neigbor As Yourself". Love is a process.
I am proud of the jounery Blacks and Latinos have taken since, the late 1940's -50's in Harlem and The Bronx. Today, the entire city is more united than it was back in the days. Blacks and Puerto Ricans, Afro Cubans/ Cubans and Domincains have a very good relationship over all. Yes, their are issues but we have learned to support each other in good times and bad times. Latino leaders in New York City have formed bonds with Black leaders. They stood in agreement and fought together on many isues. I hope you will bring some of them on your broadcast. Moreover, we share cultures in many aspects.
Hip Hop was started in The Bronx with Puerto Rican youth dancing to African drum beats in the mid 70's. This has brought both cultures closer. Not to forget Salsa, The Black Arts Movement of the 70's and The Harlem Rennaissance which Latinos in New York played a part as well.
I learned that Latinos have their diffences among each other along the lines of : Race, Class, Religion among other issues. Yet, they are bonded by the language and music. I think everyone has alot to learn from each other.
I think we need to bridge gaps in terms of trading goods and services. Many Mexicians are asking Black Americans to help them in their immigration issues.
If we look at The USA and Europe. They are allieds. They have agreements and alliances. If Mexicans want the help of Black Americans we need to ask them what are they bring to the table? What agreements are we going to be makd? Are Mexicans y will to buy Black? Are they willing to spend their money with Black Americans or trade with us? Are they willing to support our insitutions? Will this be done on a grass root level? or a larger scale? My point is one has to give in order to receive! Our agendas must be in agreement. If they are made.
I know many in the black community do not agree with Rev Al's humanitrantian position. He went to jail for Puerto Rico a few years ago .Now, he's been a voice for Mexicans immigration issues. Usually, the masses of most groups are not moved by humanitrantian issues.
I think God chooses whomever, He wants to touch humanity in His own way. History has proven this. For Example: Sadly, after MJ's death last year the media and the masses gave MJ his respect for being a humanitrantian. Our eyes are usually not focused on humanitrans at work, or we just don't really care?
I think there is enough work to be done to build bridges were there is division: Ministry , Education,Culture Sharing and Economics. Most of all healing needs to occur in the process and it will as people work together. We will learn together just as the Black New Yorkers and Perto Ricans New Yorkers and other Lantino groups in the ahave done. InThe New York City area. We came a long way.
I think, I heard somewhere that The Mexcian Government recently, formed an alliance with Japan. This would be intresting to watch?
I am also hopeful that Professor AJA will host a similar AOL Latino Voices. These bridges need to be made to heal and to help us understand our common ground. -Humanity!
I also hope that giving such insight, kindness, humanity and moral good will overcome the selfish nature in us. Therefore, others might have an opportunity to grow closer towards kindness. Kindness is an act of love according to the Bible. It will take many acts of love for us to reach our best. I think your broadcast is off to a good start.-Keep up the good work.
What people do not understand is the MEXICANS have distubed the balance in america and not to finger point at illegals, but more so them because of the huge population growth with in their communities.I work with a lot of white people I have seen the illegal imagration protester at wrigley field to boycott arziona, the white people don't want to talk about it because they are the ones complaining now. If there was not so many illegals here maybe OBAMA would not have been president so the jobs they have were the jobs we had so the back lash of that is we are more into polatics and ceo's of big companies which were meant for the white race. Latinios were meant to distract us not them so as I say to this Latinios are a threat now to our country americans are very predijudice people towards anyone when it comes to our lively hood I have spoken to many whites openly about this and believe more than one has said what I wrote here is true.
