The world has changed a bit since then. The happy political bash of the election became the tired and draining after party, and the excitement has worn off. America is no longer drunk with the thrill of having an intelligent president. So, this takes us to one final question (inspired by our friend over at the Average Bro blog): Is life better or worse under President Obama?
I focus this article on African Americans, since that is the target audience of this Web site. But every American is asking that question right now, especially after living through one of the most tumultuous economic downturns in the past 50 years. The people in the Gulf region are probably not better off, as they are facing what many are calling the worst oil spill in U.S. history. This spill has destroyed the livelihoods of thousands who depend on the sea and tourism to make a living.
African Americans have a few yardsticks they can use to measure their quality of life during the Obama presidency. You might start with the unemployment rate. Black unemployment hovers around 16.5 percent for African Americans, compared with 9 percent for whites. This differential hasn't changed since Obama became president, so perhaps it can't be linked to his presidency. We can at least say that he hasn't done much about it one way or the other, so those who expected Obama to change their lives significantly might end up a bit disappointed.
Another area where the well-being of African Americans can be measured is wealth. A recent report by the Institute for Assets and Social Policy showed that the wealth gap between whites and blacks actually grew during the past two decades. In fact, while the median wealth for whites, excluding home equity, grew from $22,000 to $100,000, the median wealth for blacks only grew from $2,000 to $5,000. Again, this is not Obama's fault and it might be unrealistic to expect him to shrink the gap. But he can also be censured by the black community for not mentioning the gap as a priority in his administration.
Obama can be credited for creating opportunities for African Americans at the highest levels, especially those who attended Harvard and Yale. He has made some key appointments of African Americans in his administration, including Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett and Attorney General Eric Holder. Also, psychologists at San Diego State University cited an "Obama Effect," in which the test scores of black children improved as a result of his presidency. Therefore, it appears that the president's success may have had a good psychological impact on the African American community.
Whether you think the Obama presidency has been good for black America probably depends on what you think about Obama himself. Most African Americans love him. His approval ratings are above 90 percent. He will probably go down in history as one of the most widely respected black men our nation has ever seen, and that fact won't be easily changed.
But we ask you, the readers of Black Voices, do you think you are better off since the election of President Obama? Economically speaking, or perhaps socially or spiritually? Please leave your thoughts below. What would you hope the president can help us as a community achieve?

This is President Obama's first year, inspite of all that's happening, it can't be changed overnight. The Bush administration left us high and dry, so I beleieve President Obama has all of us, regardless of ethenicity as a priority. Not to play the race card, but if everybody was sincere and honest, some of us blame him not so much of what he does or not, but because he's BLACK. Please, give him a fair chance!

Are you resilient or do you buckle at the knees when adversity comes your way? 2Cor4:8-9 We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.
No man has total authority or rule over us. John 19:11a Then Jesus said, “You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above.
Lets not get into a situation where life chokes the life out of us. Philippians 4:6 Don't worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.
Pray for President Obama, Our Country, and each other!!!

It's funny, I was just pondering this question in my mind this morning. After months of my sounding off about Pres. Obama not speaking out enough about the issue of race, and all its' present day injustices, I had to ask myself a question: What do I really expect him to say? And what affect would it really have on the Black community? After reading the blogs, and the "tea party" rallies, and all the other racist propaganda I see today, one thing is for certain: a vast majority of white folks in this nation have not changed thier minds about a thing!!! And this is what they mean when they say "Take back my country". So my conclusion for myself is that any real change we want to see in our community is going to have to come from within our community. I mean let's be real. Alot of the ills that our community suffers are self inflicted. No amount of speeches, or government aid from Pres. Obama is going to change that. So, aside from finally seeing someone in the White that looked like me, I think that about sums up what Obama has done for me.

You think the phrase "take my Country back" means take it back from a black president. You could not be more incorrect. We are taking it back from the LEFTISTS. We really don't care what color what color they happen to be.

I believe a lot of these poll's are not that significant when it comes to the job that the President has. The mess by the last administration was inherited by this President. It is a mess that in reality would be given to a president who the political society would love to see fail. The strongest candidates for the job was a African American man or a woman. What better way to prove to America that neither can run a country by giving them the biggest mess to clean up. In my opinion, President Obama is doing the best he can with what he has. This is not a job for anyone, it takes a very special person to hold this seat and make things happen. I have watched as President Obama has tried to keep many of his promises that he made on the campaign trail. I have watched blatent disrespect of his position as a congressman yell's out "liar" during a national speech. I have heard people like O'Reily and Limbaugh bash this President for attempting to be a man of his word. Yet people only focus on the negativity. No, he cannot wave a magic wand and all is well in the country. We cannot believe that things will turn great in the four years he is in office, however, this has got to be the most sympathetic and caring President I have ever seen in my lifetime. When things happen he is there. Those who believe he is doing a bad job as president have no patience. I will support our president and will view his policies with an open mind. Everyone cannot be pleased but I will say he is fighting for the livlihood of the U.S. and not the pockets of the wealthy and politicians that are in their pockets.

I've been watching more C-SPAN, listening to idiots of the tea party, trying to make sense out of my he is constantly attacked. I've reached the conclusion that if he wanted to, Obama couldn't make the changes thats needed in America due to three basic factors: If you don't have money to start with, a rightful claim on land holdings, no stakes in commerce or media outlets - then you really don't have a voice. That is the story of Blacks in America.
Those screaming loudest - right now - are the ones who benefits most (individually and collectively) from the status quo in U.S. They are the ones most afraid of change. That leaves the vast majority of Blacks out of the equation - unless they are greedy, wealthy or both. Greed and wealth usually cancels out any compassion for the achievment of others. It also cancels out a united effort at balancing the inequation already in existence. There would be anarchy in the U.S. if Obama really tried to do this or Obama would be killed.

Lets be real honest here, your personal employment and/or financial situation doesn't a whole heckuva of a lot no matter who the President is ! Each of us must make our own way through life's ups and downs and the President, the Senate, the Congress etc etc etc doesn't have a lot to do with our personal situations !
