The world has changed a bit since then. The happy political bash of the election became the tired and draining after party, and the excitement has worn off. America is no longer drunk with the thrill of having an intelligent president. So, this takes us to one final question (inspired by our friend over at the Average Bro blog): Is life better or worse under President Obama?
I focus this article on African Americans, since that is the target audience of this Web site. But every American is asking that question right now, especially after living through one of the most tumultuous economic downturns in the past 50 years. The people in the Gulf region are probably not better off, as they are facing what many are calling the worst oil spill in U.S. history. This spill has destroyed the livelihoods of thousands who depend on the sea and tourism to make a living.
African Americans have a few yardsticks they can use to measure their quality of life during the Obama presidency. You might start with the unemployment rate. Black unemployment hovers around 16.5 percent for African Americans, compared with 9 percent for whites. This differential hasn't changed since Obama became president, so perhaps it can't be linked to his presidency. We can at least say that he hasn't done much about it one way or the other, so those who expected Obama to change their lives significantly might end up a bit disappointed.
Another area where the well-being of African Americans can be measured is wealth. A recent report by the Institute for Assets and Social Policy showed that the wealth gap between whites and blacks actually grew during the past two decades. In fact, while the median wealth for whites, excluding home equity, grew from $22,000 to $100,000, the median wealth for blacks only grew from $2,000 to $5,000. Again, this is not Obama's fault and it might be unrealistic to expect him to shrink the gap. But he can also be censured by the black community for not mentioning the gap as a priority in his administration.
Obama can be credited for creating opportunities for African Americans at the highest levels, especially those who attended Harvard and Yale. He has made some key appointments of African Americans in his administration, including Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett and Attorney General Eric Holder. Also, psychologists at San Diego State University cited an "Obama Effect," in which the test scores of black children improved as a result of his presidency. Therefore, it appears that the president's success may have had a good psychological impact on the African American community.
Whether you think the Obama presidency has been good for black America probably depends on what you think about Obama himself. Most African Americans love him. His approval ratings are above 90 percent. He will probably go down in history as one of the most widely respected black men our nation has ever seen, and that fact won't be easily changed.
But we ask you, the readers of Black Voices, do you think you are better off since the election of President Obama? Economically speaking, or perhaps socially or spiritually? Please leave your thoughts below. What would you hope the president can help us as a community achieve?

JUDY LYNN...why do feel that it is necessary to call black people greedy? Of all the people in this country, I think we are the last group that qualifies for the title of greedy. People come here from all over the world to make money and they will do anything for the all mighty dollar. I am a lawyer assistant and 65% of all the false insurance claims that come into our office in midtown Manhattan are filed by people from the Caribbean islands. Be it car accident, falling, hit by car or anything else they can think of.
Most people dream the called American dream, so they do anything to live it. Just by the bold caps I know that your are not very intelligent, because if you really had something to say, it would have been read and understood without the caps. Have a nice day my fake sistah.

I am a 60yo Black female professional. None of this in my previous statement is associated with Pesident Obama's tenure.Perseverence and determination is what will make any person survive in this greedy, biased USA.Born black:you have to be it to feel it. Born female: again you have to be it to feel it!To prepare yourself to get a job, you have to prepare and know what YOU want to do. Then BE about it.I am sick and tired of the fake politically messed-up media interpretaion of everything that comes out as news. They sway public opinion and most of the time it is drama anf full of half truth. The BP oil spill for instance. These lying, greedy oil buffs should take the whole responsibility for messing up. And believe me we are going to pay!( American public) which includes all citizens, not race or creed.Have you noticed the newa these past few days are putting Pres. Obama on the defense for this. Using govenment leaders in Louisiana to voice their fears and blame at the whitehouse.Come on people, I lived in a nice neighborhood in E. St.Louis in the &)'s and the uncovered DIOXIN in our vicinity. These toxins were slowly killing us and it took years to reveal it. Someone put it there and that was finally blown over. Also in Dickson, Tenn. where I live now, the land is contaminated, water system is polluted ans killing people slowly. SOMEONE PUT IT THERE YEARS AGO and someone knew. Greedy government officials probably took bribes from local busimesses and brushed it under the rug. Now in RETROSPECT--OOPS! Come on news media, don't make this an issue for bad BLACK president. This is a nation wide greedy, lying, cover-up that if the truth be told, most of the old lying culprits are probably dead. Classified as " He was a great LEADER" BULL!BULL! In answer to your question,I am just living my life and it is not better or worse since we got a new president. America needs to get over whether he is black or white.( Did you see his mother before she died? He was raised and loved and told he can be anything he wants to be. OMG, that's the same thing I tell my 4 kids and 8 grand chilren.Let's wake up and see the TRUTH in all situations of LIFE. Min. Betty Carr

All I can say is I am an black man, and I can not wait until 2012 until he packs his bags and leaves the white house. I live in a rich state (Texas)and he didn't win my vote. I'm orginally from Ohio, and I promise you Obama will not win Ohio in 2012. Are we almost to 2012. Mr. Obama's ego let alone is enough to get rid of him. He is a disgrace to the Black community. Too bad most are uneducated in politics to view this. Instead, individual's are only focusing on his race. Bunk that, get rid of this nut bag. He did not hurt my pockets. Again, nor did he hurt TEXAS!!!!

FYI: You'll rarely hear an African American start off their conversation with these words. "I am Black man" unless....

@ Lamont, if you are black, your membership is revoked! WE DON'T WANT YOU! Go chill with OJ. You said "most are uneducated in politics" yet you did not give any reasons for your opinion, except his ego? You say he is a disgrace to the black community? What community are you in? President Obama is an inspiration to millions of Americans, not just black. Are you smarter than a fifth grader? You are the blackest REDNECK I ever heard of.

Christ is the answer!
GOD has promised to make all things new: Rev. 21:3-5. Now with that being the case, what sort of people should we be prior to him doing so?
Answer: Christ said in one of his sermons... He came to save those in need of healing! One does not use a physician unless he is ill. On top of the many detours placed on our path, Obama ranks numeral uno in the way of swaying us from trusting that GOD is faithful in all he does.
"As long as deceptive corruption intertwines itself around our every effort to seek GOD and what he's promised, you can rest assure we will faulter and move on strange paths towards the freedom we so desire!" ~ Merciful008

The President is doing just fine. He reminds me of some of our past Presidents, Clinton and Kennedy. They were truly REMARKABLE. Strictly for the people.
