When I read about the UK ban of singing sensation Chris Brown, I wasn't surprised. It makes sense that the artist might be at risk of being banned from Britain, since England is always more than willing to keep a celebrity out of the country if he/she has been consistently engaged in anti-social behavior. Brown certainly fits the bill, as his well-known beating of singer Rihanna has set him back quite a bit. The UK ban undermines "C Breezy's" entire European tour, costing him a ton of money in the process. UK has also banned the rapper Snoop Dogg, for even more obvious reasons.
The young singer, Brown, is learning some quick and dirty lessons about how your personal life can destroy a multi-million dollar brand. I have never met Chris personally, but I know people who know people who are inside the Chris Brown camp (I don't enjoy mingling with celebrities too much, since they don't usually make the best of friends). I recall hearing stories about how hard Chris and his original handlers had to work to get even the smallest magazine to interview him when his career first began (it always starts out this way). I then recall seeing his career shoot off like a rocket, as his first album went double platinum, selling over two million copies in the U.S. and a total of three million copies world-wide. His image was so perfect that he was singing along with characters like Elmo from Sesame Street, and somehow finding a way to make it look cool. To this day, my youngest daughter has nothing but Chris Brown posters on her wall and she refuses to believe that Chris Brown hit anyone (we still debate about that).
Chris was a bona fide superstar, and sometimes with stardom comes a hard head and hard lessons. I partially defended Chris Brown on CNN last year , attempting to remind the world that Chris is not a monster. Instead, Chris is a young man who made a serious mistake. Mind you, we must take domestic violence very seriously here in America, but I am also hopeful that Chris can find redemption. If he simply learns that a man has no right to put his hands on a woman, then he'll be just fine. Rihanna and other woman can also learn that accepting or inducing violence by attacking a man has no place in a relationship as well. Rihanna didn't deserve what she got from Chris, but if she hit him first (as some have tried to say), then she was wrong.
What is also interesting is that there are some celebrities, like Charlie Sheen, Lil Wayne and others, who can commit one crime after another and only seem to get bigger movie deals and greater opportunities. Perhaps this differential is due to the style of brand the celeb has created. Unlike Brown, Spears and Woods, who created "goody two-shoes" images, Sheen and Weezy are quick to tell everyone that they are not interested in being role models. If you recall, Britney Spears was a favorite of every teen girl in America, and was enslaved by a public perception that simply couldn't be maintained. The same is true for Tiger Woods, who used aggressive tactics to keep the media from finding out that he was anything less than perfect. Perhaps the lesson in all this is that building a brand that doesn't match the personality of the celebrity is simply not a good idea.
People know about my writing, but I do not consider myself to be a famous man. One thing I've always wanted is to be as real as I could be, so the world understands, from the very beginning, that I am no better or worse than anyone else. I never wanted to appear on the Oprah Winfrey Show as some kind of hero to soccer moms everywhere, and I didn't want people to think I was perfect. The only thing worse than not having a lot of money is to have a lot of money and lose it. That's exactly what can happen when you get rich pretending to be something you're not. Chris Brown will eventually find success, but most importantly, he must find redemption within his soul. The financial lessons from his mistake have been huge, and they will probably continue into the future.
Below, fellow BV writer, Lola Adesioye and I discuss Chris Brown's ban, and what this could mean for his career. Lola is actually from England, so the conversation is quite interesting. Enjoy!

I just want to be CLEAR...are you saying that she got what she deserved?...I sincerely hope not!Chris Brown did this to himself and unfortunately must suffer the consequences of his ACTIONS point blank, there is no double standard here as you put it.This is the consequences of the ACTIONS he took, bottom line.

You better preach...I've been saying this from the beginning...none of us know what really happen; but I truly believe Rihanna hit him first....and he held out until he couldnt take it anymore...
I'm a firm believer that if you hit anyone MAN or WOMAN expect to get hit back..I know so many woman that push, bite scratch, slap, punch and kick, tear up clothes and so on to the men they are with and will say he better not hit me..they use the laws in place as a shield because no matter what that dude is going down (ie Chris Brown) I find it disgusting...how some women can be...a man has the right to defend himself...and if you know he hits harder than you keep your hands to yourself...
Chick been prancing around half naked not a care in the world..riding her success while sitting back watching him take all the blame..I'm not condoning what he did but fair is fair...
Women alway a hollering equals right, until the get into a rough situation..then its whoah is me...

WHY ARE YA SPREADING LIES?! CHRIS WASN'T BANNED BECAUSE OF THAT SHIT WITH GOAT FROM LAST YEAR, IT WAS MUCH MORE SIMPLER THAN THAT..HIS VISA WASN'T SUBMITTED IN ENOUGH TIME AND NOW HIS TEAM IS WORKING TO GET EVERYTHING STRAIGHTENED OUT! BESIDES, CHRIS IS FAR FROM BROKE YOU JERKS! HELLO, THE BOY WAS DOING SOLD OUT CONCERTS, ENDORSEMENTS, MOVIES WAY BEFORE THAT INCIDENT. WHAT YA NEED TO BE WRITING ABOUT IS THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL THAT IS RIHANNA INSTEAD OF FOCUSING ON CHRIS WHO HAS NOT COMMITTED ANYTHING WRONG IN 2010 AND THE ONLY THING YOU CAN PIN AGAINST HIM IS WHAT HAPPENED BETWEEN HIM AND RIHANNA FROM FEB OF 2009 WHEN THEY WEREN'T EVEN TOGETHER. PPL FAIL TO SEE THE OBVIOUS FACTS THAT 1. RIHANNA SOLD CHRIS UNDER THE BUS TO SELL MORE RECORDS WHEN HER ALBUM WAS GOING TO BE RELEASED A FEW WKS LATER B. THAT SHE DID SAY, NO I DIDN'T HIT HIM FIRST, AND EVEN IF I DID DOES THAT GIVE HIM THE RIGHT TO HIT ME? U DAMN RIGHT CUZ U SHOULDN'T PUT UR HANDS ON ANYONE AND NOT THINK ABOUT THE OUTCOME AND C. THAT SHE SAID THE ONLY REASON SHE ENDED THINGS AFTER THEY "GOT BACK TOGETHER" WAS SIMPLY CUZ SHE WAS THINKING ABOUT THE ENDORSEMENTS SHE WOULD LOSE! HELLO! SHE HAS BEEN BROKE FOR A LONG TIME..I REMEMBER IN DECEMEBER OF 2008, HER EX-ACCOUNTANT WENT ON THE NEWS DECLARING HER TO BE BROKE..THAT SHE COULD BARELY AFFORD TO BUY A HYUNDAI BUT YET, PPL WANT TO WRITE THAT CHRIS IS BROKE! U ARE ALL OUT YOUR MINDS IF YOU REALLY THINK THAT'S TRUE! HELL, HE MADE MILLIONS FROM HIS SOLD OUT TOUR'S LEG IN BRAZIL ALONE THIS PAST MAY! BUT NO, PLEASE CONTINUE TO TRY TO KEEP CHRIS DOWN..HE IS SIMPLY TAKING HIS MONEY WITH ALL THIS HATE TO THE BANK! THEY ARE WORKING TO GET HIM TO HIS IRELAND TOUR AND REARRANGE THE UK PORTION, HE HAS OTHER CONCERTS IN STORE FOR THIS SUMMER AND FALL..JAMAICA SUMMER FEST IN JULY AND RETURNING TO WHAT WILL BE A BACK TO BACK SOLD OUT TOUR IN THE US..PLUS, TAKERS IS COMING OUT IN AUGUST IN THE STATES..NO, YOU CONTINUE TO SPREAD LIES ABOUT CHRIS BROWN..HE WILL SURVIVE THIS AS HE HAS THE LIES RIHANNA AND HER TEAM HAVE COOKED UP SO PEOPLE WILL CONTINUE TO TRY TO KEEP CHRIS DOWN! FOLKS WHO WERE ONCE AGAINST CHRIS ARE STARTING TO GET TIRED OF HEARING ABOUT THE SITUATION (BECAUSE IT'S NOT AS THOUGH THEY WERE THE FIRST TO HAVE AN INCIDENT) AND BECAUSE THEY THINK CHRIS HAS SUFFERED ENOUGH. IN MY OPINION, WE ARE NOT GOD SO JUDGING ANYONE IS IRRELEVANT!

First people, Rihana I am tired of seeing, she has went from fresh to dark and demonic. She has use Cris to boost her career and what is left of her tired career. and that is so wrong. I think Chris is a brillant person. who needs to lay low and keep doing what he is doing. dont bother to much with being seen and come back with a poppin album. I love him he got a bad deal. He was young and he was setup. This chick set him up good. she knew his weak point and she push him to the limit. I believe she did hit him first. Number one she is a woman and a black one sometimes we pop off and start yelling and the next thing we hit first and then that is it. Why she never told the truth i have no idea. I guess it was about her career first. But, this young man has to suffer from her greed and lies. cause after that Rihanna went to party and never stop dating. how much did chris hurt Rihana. no one ever look at that. they took a 18 or 19 year old young man who has not finish growing up who was not mature enough to hold his temper(know his past) and mad him look like he was the worst person in the world. that is just wrong. and you as a write is supose to keep it real at all cost. not right lies. but this is the world we live in. I am praying that GOD will help Chris Brown to come back strong. Chris lay low work hard as hell on your new album an bust them over the head with it. you can do it be encourage boo. your black sister.

It's enough shit going on in this world to even talk about this garbage...BP oil spills, wars, rumors of wars, hunger etc...and recently Isreal attacking and murdering humanitarian ships.
With all of this, that little boy and girl is not worth a comment.
I know I will get hits like " If you don't like the topic...blah blah blah...but folks we as black people have to be more visual and verbal concerning the rest of the world.

To Moe. Get the hell off your soapbox. Domestic Violence and crime in general is about as "visual and verbal" as we can be as black folks. Forget the oil spill, we have a blood spill going on in our own back yards. How the hell we going to be concerned about being "visual and verbal" concerning the rest of the world when our world is turned upside down by violence. When we clean up our own backyards and stop fighting and killing each other THEN we can extend our concerns to the rest of the world. Until then neither of us, including you, can stop an oil spill, war, rumor of war and whatever you have on your list. Cause all the ills of this world got started because of the violence, greed and selfishness which is learned and accepted behavior in this society. Let the people on this board discuss Rihanna and Chris, cause its really more deeper than their situation.

It is that country perogative to ban Chris, if they like. But, they need to also ban Rhiana because she is not innocent in this. They are both young adults and they both made mistakes. How come her career is sky rocketing and his is being stalled. I don't condone domestic violence at all but this is not fair. He is in counseling and I hope she is also. He was wrong and she was she. I like them both. Why mess up his career. Give him a chance to change his ways.
