One of the most interesting stories by Lady Drama, formerly of Bossip.com, was the pending divorce of Mathew and Tina Knowles, parents of the great Beyoncé. On a side note, I was shocked when Beyoncé was not awarded the performer of the decade award by BET. She has clearly dominated her industry like no other: Tremendous success with virtually no significant or self-imposed drama, no seriously ignorant quotes, and no scandals of her own making. Her father prepared her quite well to deal with the pressure cooker of superstardom. I can't say the same thing for the equally great Alicia Keys, the artist who won.

Beyonce and Solange Fashion Transformation
In 2001, Destiny's Child won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Song for their hit single 'Say My Name.' Beyonce was 20 years old, and Solange was 15. New to superstardom, these young girls from Texas would take their time developing their sense of style.

Looking just like her mom Tina, Beyonce began her career with hair extensions based on braids, way before she would "upgrade" to lace-front wigs. Beyonce's mother's taste would continue to influence the her, as she would struggle to develop her own looks apart from her mother's sensibilities.

Working a strange mix of accessories, Beyonce used her ensemble to promote her self-penned hit 'Bootylicious.' We do what we must to reach the top! It was 2001, and still a few more years before Bey would cement her top spot without resorting to desperate fashion moves.

At the 2001 Teen Choice Awards, Beyonce and Solange fully evoked the over-the-top tacky look that became synonymous with their mother's style choices. Matching neon yellow outfits and braids in clashing shades of auburn were made worse by the wrong make-up colors. Having their mother as their stylist was quite the cross for B. and Solange to bear.

In outfits containing a range of colors in clothing, hair, make-up and accessories that defy my capacity for negative description, Solange and Beyonce attended the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards -- wearing more clothes designed by Tina Knowles. Need we say more?

As a teen, Solange grew up in the fast lane. Her braids, scarf, tee and jewelry were clothing any average girl would wear. As much as she needed to develop her sense of style as a star, Solange's deeper struggle would include developing an identity apart from her sister.

Solange and Beyonce posed together in 2002. This is an uncharacteristically dressed-down look for Bey. Do you think she still has that 'Michael Jackson's Thriller' shirt?

Through this two-tone hair sculpture in the form of a lace-front wig, Beyonce shows the world that they do indeed do things big in Texas at the 'Austin Powers In Goldmember' premiere in 2002. While Beyonce began to branch out into acting roles at this time and slightly mature in her sense of style, Solange still seemed like a non-entity totally dressed by Mom.

These two sisters made an appearance on MTV's 'TRL' in 2002 wearing distinctly different casual looks. While Beyonce took her relaxed dressing to a costume-like extreme, Solange still looked like a normal young person.

At the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, Bey gave a knockout performance and revealed what many would come to term the "Beyonce Look" in full force. The huge blond mane and over-the-top sexy outfits were here to stay.

At any rate, one small side-issue in the Knowles family (again, not due to Beyoncé's choices) is her father Mathew producing a love child with a woman 20 years younger than himself. Mathew is a major part of the reason that Beyoncé has been so poised and successful over the years, but apparently, his decision to give in to male temptation has led to the estrangement of his daughter, who is refusing to speak to him. Apparently, this whole baby thing started with a 38-year-old woman named Alexsandra Wright, with whom Mathew allegedly had an 18-month affair.
Executives at Columbia are apparently concerned that Beyoncé not speaking to her father could disrupt her ability to do what they need her to do best: make that cheddar. An insider to the music industry said, "Beyoncé was horrified to find out her dad cheated on her mom. She always looked up to him, and she is very close to her mom, so this has hit her really hard. She is refusing to speak to him, which is making things difficult where it comes to managing her career. Some people at Columbia now think it would be better to move him aside." In full alignment with custom, Wright took Mathew to court and requested child support. She now receives the healthy sum of $8,200 per month, which we all know is the absolute minimum necessary to raise a child these days. Beyoncé's parents are also getting a divorce. Here are some quick thoughts on this matter, which likely affects millions of families across America:
- It must not be forgotten that Mathew is a major reason for Beyoncé's success. In spite of his flaws, a split between Beyoncé and Mathew could be as bad as Tiger Woods losing his dad or when the Dallas Cowboys fired coach Jimmy Johnson. Sometimes, we think we don't need each other, when the truth is that we actually do. Beyoncé and her dad formed a highly successful partnership, and I truly believe that her success will decline if she parts ways with her father completely.
- Beyoncé should realize that her parents' relationship should not undermine her feelings toward her father. She doesn't know the status of their marriage, and if Mathew is not interested in remaining married, he should not be penalized for his personal decisions. What's saddest is that sometimes little girls have idealistic perceptions of their dads and don't want to believe that they can be tempted by other women. A man succumbing to this temptation should not supercede all he has done to be a good father. Mathew dedicated over 30 years of his life to the Knowles family and that doesn't change because he slept with someone else.
- I hope Beyoncé doesn't think men are completely evil and worthless if they cheat. She is married to a man (Jay-Z) who spent years rapping about how many women he's slept with. Sometimes there are things about other people we just don't want to know. I've personally never wanted to know everything about my significant other: I just want to be sure that she loves me and that she makes responsible decisions when I'm not around. While we certainly have the risk of venereal disease among us, the only way to completely avoid such risk is to remain celibate for life, which just isn't going to happen. Bottom line: When you mingle with other human beings, you are probably at risk in ways you can't even imagine.
Long story short, Beyoncé not speaking to her dad is going to change the dynamic of her career. Despite being caught doing wrong in his personal life, Mathew was one of the major engines that drove the Beyoncé ship, and he should remain a part of the team. It's not easy to build and maintain a brand that earns nearly $100 million dollars per year, and there are thousands of pretty young women seeking to take Beyoncé's place. She can't get caught slipping.

I think she will be alright. She's just upset right now. Remember Janet and Michael fired their father, had personal issues with him, and went on to be very successful.

Beyonce is an entertainer and she does it well, but IMO, she is not a true vocalist/singer. The deal with Beyonce is, overratings! If I shake hard enough, if I wear my lace front wigs long enough, if I appear to be light enough, I will DOMINATE the music industry with fluff and that's about it. No substance. We all know of countless singers on the circuit who are so underrated until it's pitiful. I wouldn't judge any of what you have mentioned as being a true singing success, especially in today's watered down industry. As far as the split from her father will cause her some financial crises, I don't it. She will be fine on that level.

wow, for someone to say that Beyonce is not a true vocalist, you really dont know the meaning of true singing. I have seen her in concert, and she can hold a note better than any singer i have heard. And guess what, live performances dont have buffering additives to make it sound better. Her voice is pure and flawless. I think someone is just hating. Lace wigs and shaking booty does help you look good and sell records. But she really does not have to do all of that cause she is a true vocalist.

I think that Beyonce is a very good singer. I don't understand why so many individuals say that she cannot sing or dance. She is a very good singer to me, and her energy on stage is incredible! Why so much hate against Beyonce? SMH. Bey, also loves her fans, and is equally respectful of everyone that she encounters in her life. She also has been trained and prepared well for the industry by her dad and her mom, who worked many years in her own hair salon so that her husband could manage Destiny Child and so that they could pay their bills. Tina Knowles sacrificed a lot for her marriage and they worked together for the sake of the girls, and she has not disparaged her husband in any way, despite the fact that he has hurt her with the birth of this out of wedlock child. She has managed to hold onto to her sanity with grace and dignity, and show him respect as the father of Solange and Beyonce. If Mr. Knowles is a good dad, Bey should keep him as her manager. Bey should not judge him on what he has done. Children are not privy to the state of their parents marriage, and it is highly inappropriate to discuss your marriage or disparage your spouse to your child. Bey has seen how imperfect her dad is but she should judge him on what a dad he has been in her life, and not on his mistakes. As much as I abhor his affair, he is still her dad, and he loves her very much. That has not changed one iota.

Unlike Dr. Boyce Watkins, I do agree with BET's choice in presenting Alicia Keys with their Artist of the Decade Award. Now, I have stated my opinion about that tidbit...
Right now, Beyonce is dealing with the pain that comes with divorcing parents. I do agree with Dr. Watkins, when he said that it is in the father's right to wanting a divorce, but what Watkins need to understand that not only divorce hurts the married couple, but it also hurts other people as well.
