Michael Jackson's Las Vegas Home Gets Vandalized

The Las Vegas home of recently-deceased pop star Michael Jackson was vandalized this week. Police officers are saying that when they arrived at the home, it was covered with "illegible" graffiti on several walls inside and outside the home.

According to TMZ, no one has lived in the home for more than a year. Also, the officers have no leads on who might have done this. Fans have been visiting the home since Jackson's death, and the property is likely part of the Jackson estate, which has earned over $1 billion dollars since the singer died.

I was watching a Michael Jackson tribute the other day on CNN. I find it amazing that we tend to appreciate people so much more in death than we ever did when they were alive. Before Michael died, many people made fun of him, talked about how he'd decided to be white, and rumored about how he might be going broke. Now, he has been elevated to an icon-like status that will only grow through time. Jermaine Jackson, Michael's brother, even said that MJ should be give a monument in Washington. Are you kidding me? Well, some fans agree with him, and this DC resident has already created one in her home.

I decided that I would try not to fall for the hype. I've always thought Michael Jackson was an incredibly talented performer. At the same time, I've never thought that a performer should get more respect than hard working school teachers, police officers, firemen and parents. Michael earned hundreds of millions of dollars for being great, which he deserved, and he lived an extraordinary life. But I am not interesting in turning him into Jesus. The news of the unfortunate attack on his former home shows that Jackson still has the power to rouse strong emotion even in death, but his tragic death shows that he was in fact a very fragile human and not a God.
