I sat for three hours with Rev. Al Sharpton during his radio show the other day. Although being on the air with the reverend is always interesting, I believe some of the best conversations happen during the commercial breaks. One such conversation involved Tyler Perry films and his public lashing by 'Boondock's creator Aaron McGruder. I am not at liberty to share things that were discussed off the air, but we did hit the issue on his radio show, and I thought it would be worth a second discussion.
I am always impressed with McGruder's work, which tends to be incredibly funny, bold and creative. In fact, I would say that 'The Boondocks' cartoon can be "funny as hayell," with that kind of Richard Pryor, slap-ya-mama, tell your friends kind of laughter that is all too rare in modern comedy.
McGruder is the black Bill Maher, presenting intelligent and cutting-edge social commentary that surely makes the establishment squeal. When Sharpton and I discussed McGruder's latest bomb on Tyler Perry, neither of us were sure what to think. On one hand, McGruder's freedom of speech must be respected. On the other hand, you have to wonder when and if he has gone too far.
In this particular episode, McGruder yanks Perry out of the closet in a parody of him that describes the powerful director-producer as a gay, tyrannical filmmaker who enjoys sexually harassing the men on his staff. The portrayal was hardly flattering, and it was even more astonishing due to the fact that both Perry and McGruder are employed by the same network. I'm sure some were stunned to see this kind of black-on-black crime in the midst of a multibillion-dollar media empire; Aaron McGruder might describe this fight as a "n*gga moment."
The broader question to be considered here is that of Perry and his work. Do his films, which possess a somewhat predictable recipe involving the church, black women, a man in a dress and muscle-bound men with sweaty bodies represent the good, the bad or the ugly of the African American community? Some, like Spike Lee, have gone hard on Perry, saying that he presents the kind of minstrel show that racists in America are always willing to pay money to see.
I don't agree with Spike Lee, and I am actually quite proud of Perry's achievements. On one hand, we can argue that Perry's films are an exciting view into the life of a man who started with nothing and ended up with everything. He's hugged up with Oprah in every other picture, and he even built a studio in Atlanta that employs hundreds of African American actors, writers, producers, sound engineers, etc. For that, he should be applauded.
On the other hand, some might say that Perry is a man who has intelligently analyzed all of the really stupid things about being black in America. In spite of the fact that his films share many high quality lessons after the show is over, most of us are somewhat disturbed by yet another image of a cross-dressing black man next to other black people who seem all too willing to dance for a piece of chicken. The Buffoonery Clause of Southern life is one that would be difficult for a strong Northern filmmaker like Lee to accept, since his unapologetic style contrasts quite directly with the subtle smile-in-your-face methods used for the survival of Southern blacks since slavery.
When it's all said and done, McGruder has the right to portray Perry as he wishes. The attack, however, is poor in spirit, primarily because Perry has become successful by attacking almost no one. It's not as if Perry is a gangster rapper telling men to have sex with every girl in the world, or an athlete who squanders his wealth and tells kids to smoke weed every day (through example). He simply makes simple-minded comedies that center on black culture, providing lessons on morality and family at the end. There's nothing in the world wrong with that.

The usually overly analytical faction of our race
will always be an enemy of Tyler Perry. His stories
are closely related to most everyday black experiences. His including of church in the movies
that he makes are hints that we need a little
benevolence within our culture. We need to take heed.

Ok, McGruder is no Bill Maher (see Chris Rock for political/situational humor) ... I put McGruder's comedy on par with Paul Mooney. Although I like McGruder's style of in your face humor. This humor is not new. What actually is the difference between McGruder and Tyler Perry? .......the audience who they are appealing to. It is the same type of shtick. Different settings, same premise.
Perry gives you drag, muscle men and stereotypical women. McGruder give you "niggA's", bad ass children and stereotypical black/white community people. What makes McGruder, Perry or even Spike that different? Was Flip Wilson this criticize for being in drag? I was young then so I don't remember. Other than maybe 6 movies Spike has directed out of 35, all were stereotypical.
I applaud Perry's efforts from nothing to something. I applaud his growth from the "chittlin" circuit to owning his own studio. I applaud the PROGRESSION of is movies. What he offers today is not the same product as the first Madea movie. ( i am no fan of the Madea movies - however cannot escape them in the beauty shop tv) Story lines are getting better. I am waiting on the next movie - For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf... I have my fingers crossed.
I applaid Mcgruder's comics. They are a riot. I applaud the next episode - no matter who he makes fun of. If you are an equal opportunity offender(which he is) - then the real question is WHY is he getting called out for this show about Perry?
I appllaud Spike, didn't they say the same thing about you back in the day for 'race baiting"? I like Spike for all of his works and because without him - there is no Perry or McGruder.............

i like TP.. i do get tired of the stereotypes but it doesn't stop me from tuning in and laughing.. he's funny.. I like the Browns, i don't care for the other show.. i like majority of his movies.. my favorites were "why did i get married" and "the family that preys together".. he should keep adding variety, the good, the bad and the ugly..

I can understand somewhat Spike's point, but the things that he accuses Tyler of, is the reason why I could never watch "School Daze". Wannabe's and Jiggaboo's?? I understand he was using that to make a point, but the same principle applies.
The Madea character actually reminds me of my late Aunt. She was large, fierce, fiesty and loud, quoted bible scriptures (correctly), had a sharp tongue that could shred you to pieces, but a big heart that loved everyone. She often fed homeless and down on their luck folks. I don't think I'm the only person who knows a "Madea", and it makes me wonder is what the real issue is: is it a poor description/representation of black life, or an embarrassing portrait of truth?
Tyler got his start with black plays. Black entertainment for black people. Now that the "world" is watching, some want to silence him. I have mixed feelings about it. I want blacks to be viewed positively and I know that the behavior of one tends to be applied to all, but blacks, like whites are a diverse community. They have their trailer park, dumb and dumber portrayals, as well as positive or ordinary roles. In order for us to be accepted as "just like everyone" we need to have diverse images as well. If we want to be judged individually, instead of collectively, we need to stop acting like a single black image or movie or action represents the collective. Put out a counter-image. I do realize "the world" still judges blacks and other minorities collectively, and I'm not totally open minded myself: I draw the line at the "hot ghetto mess" crap that BET was trying to put on the air at one time, but in order to diversify our image, we have to start to diversify our image. In real life, we have to accept people for their true selves: some are ghetto, some are high class, their accomplishments, or lack thereof, do not diminish or add to my stature. I believe we gain personal freedom the more we come to realize this.
I often wonder if Tyler is going to have a Dave Chappelle moment where he walks away because he realizes that "the world" is laughing AT him, not with him. Regardless, he is giving jobs and exposure to blacks in an industry that is known to be hostile to us. In the past, blacks could only get roles as maids in the movies. Let him get a foot in the door, so he can drag others in with him, and then change the landscape. He's only been at this (nation wide films, studio etc) for a few years. He has good mentors, like Oprah. I think eventually he will do very well and give even the naysayers something to be "proud" about.

Tyler Perry is a genius and a God-send. Everyone of his plays and movies has a real-life conflict and positive life changing solutions. He does this with such comic grace. It is amazing to me how his critics over look the overlapping issues he raises and focus in on one aspect of his work. I am insulted and baffled that his critics are suppose to be educated. Tyler Perry, keep soaring with the wings of an eagle. I am one of your greatest fans. What's bad for Black America is an inability to see your fellowman succeed and do well.

One of Spike Lee's first movies, "She's Gotta Have It", made black women look like unstable, feeble-minded Whores. Therefore, he has nothing to say about what has set us back as black people. There was no point in portraying black women in that way.

Although I can apluad Mr. Tyler for creating such an awesome production..he stands ourt and comman attention..all over..however, I hate and dislike seeing a man dress like a woman..I felt the same about Geraldine and sha na na...I feel that we have enough fags, freaks, gay, transvestites..do take care of all that...he had me wondering if he was gay....I like real men..our children don't need to bombarded with stuff like that..we need to teach our young boys how to men oin a world that promotes..men men..woman woman...we are having enough trouble with positive role models as it is..now if we didn't have such problems in our communities throughout the world and didn't have so many single family without that positive, strong male figure..okay, I can laugh to...but I know the consequences of my selfishness in just looking at his shows and entertainment...we can't afford it...we are already losing our kids to gang banging, drugs, thuggish behavior, and they are even experimenting with each other...we better wake up and smell the coffee, and all of you with children better check what they are watching on tv..I know some of you may think that show on comedy central .. umm..what's the name..southparkis funny...men raping men and a figure that' a man .. he she whatever..and all the foul language..our kids consume more nagativity than something educational..then we wonder want wrong with them....come on people don't have to be a rocket scientist...you just need to break those chains of ignorance and psychological slavery of the brain...all these yrs after Malcolm...Marcus Garvey...and yea....even Martin and tried to uplift the black race and what do we do let them get assasinated...no back bone when it come to others..they can do whatever they want..but your own kind....the hating is thick..such as the haters against Fantasia..like she's the only one who who got caught up....all the hating was and ios sickning..when it comes to your own kind..now we have our blackmen talking negative and against the blackwoman./...they don't deal or want blackwoman because "we don't know how to treat our men..gold diggers, loud..etc...as bad as many SOME blackmen treat blackwoman but we hung in there...stood by you when you and supported you..even with your insecurities...if you noticed I said SOME...it's very negative to express nagativity all over the media etc against the blackwoman..no man haas ever been with all blackwoman...that's like saying all blackmen are woman beaters, dogs, shiftless, lazy, insecure, can make a black baby but don't take of them..etc...now is that true of all blackmen....I would say not...the only race of people that have no second thought about talking talking against thier woman like we're some type of plaque..even have the adacity to say.."the whiteman don't even want us..how dare you...then to add insult to injury going to prop up the whitewoman and Asianwoman..saying, "they know how to treat thier man...we forget so fast...once upon a time..you as look at the so called "forbidden fruit..your butt will be like poor emmit Tils..I know many of you never heard of or forgot..but it has nopt been that long ago...the Whiteman will do all kinds of bad things to the Whiteman..chop them up in many pieces and throw away like trash in a garbage bag..but you never here them condeming for the whole world to hear..they don't need or want a Whitewoman...most of us good blaclkwoman been beat down, talked down and disrespected until we had better have some sense and build up a guard for protection.....what's ges me angry is it works both ways...there hell from both sides...blackwoman are treated shi--y just as much..SOME Blackmen don't know how to treat a lady when he meets one...SOME, but in this case, I can say MOST...basically want sex when you first meet...even have the nerve to want us to go down...o..I can see why we don't know how to treat....because we refuse to take stuff we this or that....nopw to show that your so quick to go to another race....speaking foe myself and I do know other decent hardworking blackwoman get treated shit-- by Blackwoman also..so tell me something new..and yes, many Blackwoman irritate because they are loud, nasty, and slutty &
bit--y..yes, I said it..and what is really crazy..the many woman into another woman...it's bad enough we got to watch out for the so called "down low brother"..Lord help us!!! SOME Blackman will go to another race qicker than a Blackwoman and when SOME see a sexy blackwoman with with another race..o...know..the looks, I've never dated outside my race, although it has recently crossed my mind...but I have faith that my Blackman is looking for me too anf guest what...he will be happy to tell everbody that his Blackwoman knows how to treat her Blackman..and another thing that's crazy...I am size 10, well groomed, working on my MS, one son who is 31 and is not loud or stuck up...then to see a fine Blackman with .. I don't like to talk down or ugly..but he don't pick the creme of the crop..she fat, and well you get the picture..we can't woin from losing..see a woman like me .. just because I am well groomed..I have to be "high maintenance"..now if this one don't take the cake...I did a profile on a chit chat line..yea, I said chit chat line..make no sense..anyway....my profile for what I desired in a and I specified, perferred a Blackman..nothing against other races..matter fact I may re-consider...SOME of them knows how to treat a lady.....plus they don't mind wineing and dining...anyway...some of the things I said was..he had to be mature, secure minded, well groomed, drama free, works out, fun, romantic and works out and knows how to treat a lady....you I received several ms..saying..I was asking too much..there's no man out there with all that..that's why I'm looking..well guest what.. I don't care for a thuggish man..where ever word is a curse word..or he's been to jail..or no vehicle..all the mess MOST of us Blackwoman have to deal with..one other thing...now if a woman is considered a "golddigger"...here that one all the time then what is a man that alway want what's betweena woman's leg...o, would he not be considered a p---y digger..or I guest that's different..my observation of MOST men, and I can say that..I said MOST not signifying like i am referring to all....makes a big difference...but my observation..thier brain is not on their head..SOME....will break their neck..don't care..she's white..unattractive..all she has to do is fluant...I had to get that off my chest .. this is not the so called "Diary of a Mad Blackwoman,"...This Blackwoman is getting the facts right..tired of being disrespected by our own men..conquer and divide continues to live...the only race on earth..that are thier own gratest enemy..don't won't take care of their own full bloodied children but don't mind talking care mix child...For your Blackmen, and if the show fits...wear it..but if you want a woman of another race so be it..suppose to be a Free country...don't have to worry too much about the tree..but stop showing the world that the Black Race is so low down thay the Blackman, who I thought was catching all the hell from the Whiteman..is all of a sudden a hot commodity...go whitewoman jumping in front of me when at one time...but stop being ignorant..if you don't feel that you owe you momma or daughter any respect..than that's on you..but the world is looking..I have words of love and appreciation to all the Blackmen out there who honor thier woman and is mature and intelligent to know all blackman are not what SOME Blackmen talk down on us..everyday..can't turn on the radio to CERTAIN Black radio shows where there is alway a topic during the week badegering the Blackwoman..IT MUST STOP..if you been treated wrong or not treated like you desire or hear SOME Blackwoman being loud..hello....that's no reason to put down all Blackwoman with a Bull hore...as bad as we are treated...you don'y hear the Blackwoman putting the Blackman down for another race..think about that...

Ms. Watkins,
I'll tell you what's wrong with Mr. Perry's films, and the issue is in regards to the audience relationship with superficiality.
I do understand, there's individuals who can cater to others' tastes. Just like an intelligent rapper names Plies is a high school valedictorian and has a college degree, though he sells who music and influences our young generation to be come aggressive and irrational "goons" as they call em.
Me and my buddy discussed this and we came to two conclusions that he is either: 1)Incredibly stupid to be ashamed of his (obvious on record) intelligence and pose to be dumber than he actually is in order to gain "street" credibility, or 2) Incredibly smart to use what he knows about the current hip hop/rap market and cater to those tastes to make money, though he embraces no responsibility (doesn't care) for the consequences of those lyrics in society. I mean there's no way you can tell me that anyone with that recorded level of academic achievements is pretending to be dumb because he's ashamed of his intelligence. It now becomes more obvious that the "artist" embraces the opportunity to make profits, on an audience who now identifies themselves as "goons" and whatever females want to call themselves.
As a bad a scenario that may be, let me digress in relevance with the case of Mr. Perry's films. Yes the message may be good, but with the shallow, dysfuctiontional list of characters the audience identifies with, there is severe conflict of moral interest. My dad used to tell me, "Don't let your kids see you do something, that you don't want them to do" If your parents told you to never smoke, and they smoked daily raising you, that's a bad example isn't it? Madea can't tell me anything while threatening my neighbor with a weapon lol.
With Mr. Perry's films, it is hard for me to digest his messages when I'm eating it with shallow and dysfunctional utensils.
But when we're talking about this money, i understand fully..To each his own...lol
