The USDA came under increased scrutiny recently because of the unjust firing of Shirley Sherrod. I am hopeful that the sloppy handling of the Sherrod incident is not indicative of the way the USDA does business. In fact, groups have been calling for the firing of the Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack over the Sherrod incident. He may deserve it. The way Ms. Sherrod has been treated should be an illuminating moment exposing the USDA's pattern of racism, which also caused the plight of these black farmers.
The black farmers' settlement issues began in a 1997 court case, Pigford v. Glickman. As a senator, Barack Obama sponsored "Pigford II," which re-opened the case leading to the $1.25 billion settlement in February of this year. In the settlement of the case, farmers were to be awarded $50,000 each to settle their claims of racial discrimination. As president, many thought Obama would push the payment of the settlement through, but he has not made it a priority. The House has already approved the settlement funds, but now the Senate is holding it up, primarily the Republicans. While Republicans say they would like to see the claims money approved, we all know that the Republican Party could care less about black farmers.
Hopefully the Sherrod firing will make the continuing injustices against these black farmers at the hands of the USDA and now the federal government so clear that both parties will be embarrassed into ending this delay.
Cases like this one are part of the reason I can't stand politics. Elected officials sit comfortably in their offices playing games with one another, while there are real people engaged in real suffering as a result of their decisions. Black farmers are on the verge of bankruptcy waiting for these economic injustices to be corrected, and there is no sense of urgency in Washington. I argue that for every day the approval is delayed, substantial penalties should be applied to the amount of the settlement.
Saddest in all of this is that the discrimination took place over decades, meaning that there are many farmers who may have died broke waiting for us to do the right thing. It's time for black farmers to be compensated, and for the political games to come to an end.

Payment to the black farmers are way past due, it was no surprise how Shirley Sherrod was treated when it was thought she has been discriminating against whites. I only wish we could respond the same when blacks are discriminated against daily. I also believe they fired her so fast to avoid a backlash from whites, it is true that blacks still fear the hatred that comes from whites and from the right. It is sad, that is why we as a country isnt all it could be and lagging behind countries like China. Some say lets have a conversation about race, I believe whites don't do see anything in it for them, so why bother, they are not be affected by it, so why talk, many don't want things to change. I heard a white guy on tv the other night say he never experience racism and he was probably in his late 40s, I dont know many blk men in that age group that could say that, if they could they likely didn't know it was happening..

Well ! Well ! Well ! @ Wha-up it sure is funny that the past is still repeating itself in this present time , but you are not screaming about working together and being fair on things that are still effecting Blacks today are you ! So please remember that with the illegal immigration issue as well " The Past is the Past according to you So " you should be down with that issue and other issues that are taking more present over whites and not of the past status quo ok !
Bottom line give them black farmers their money and stop all this BS !

This is basically to Wha-Up who commented on 07/27/10 at 5:27 pm. Apparently you are a young person who has not had the "opportunity" of being mistreated solely on skin color. If you have and you are okay with it, something is truly wrong with you. What you must undrstand is that yes, this case dates from the 80's, but come on, you were probably BORN in the 80's. Does this not SHOCK you. Will racism stop? No, I don't think so, and from the looks of young folks like you there is ample room for it to continue to grow. I only wish I could let you know the feeling of being mistreated because of your race. Besides, do you mean to tell me that if I hold back something from you because of what you look like, you honestly do not want it if it is yours to have? If this is true, I and no one else should try to talk with you because you are beyond the ability to understand. Seriously, sit by yourself and THINK about having things in life done to you based on the fact that you are the RACE that you are. You could be white, I don't know, but would that make it alright? Tell me, Wha-up, since you think it is something simple to get over, what makes people do these things to each other, and why is the black race discriminated by others so often and easily? You need to wake up. Racism is daily. Daily is NOT the past. It is the PRESENT!!!!

I do think if MORE-People would show their concern, then they would take notice, there is power in numbers so...they assume we don't care about these black farmers but,say a white farmer did not get paid?sure some BL. farmers have died waiting, now what do you think will happen to those that could have had the guts to stand and did-not?

I'm not surprised about the turn of events in our society. We are the only people in the world who wait for the kindness of strangers. It's almost like we went to sleep after the civil rights movement, and those of us who participated in the civil rights movement are either dead or to old, and those who are to young to remember or just to complacent.
It's the Tyler Perry's, the Oprah Winfrey's who are in charge now of maintaining the nigger stereo types that we see on television and in the media these days. Do not, give me bull about what they have done in the community of people of color because by comparison the damage they do is worse.
It's the black directors and producers who are responsible for the black faces with white lips images we see constantly portrayed on television today. I fought during the civil rights movement to rid ourselves of these images thought to be funny by white directors and producers and those above. But covertly they have made they're way back on the screen with blacks at the helm, so that white's can says they are not the perpetrators who are perpetuating it. They even successfully stopped and converted the most hardcore rappers ( ll cool J, stoop dog, Ice- T, Ice cube, Queen latifad) far to many to mention here ~ who were once (some not all) drug dealers, gang bangers who once made music about killing somebody (white) or each other, who are now in the movies business acting like or being comedians, wearing dresses and lipstick...playing buffoons, pimps, drug dealers or even police officers, lawyers, doctors, fireman, it doesn't matter the common denominator in every character is always the language & mannerism, lest not forget braids or bald heads blacks males are require to have in sports and acting and reporting news ~ It's certainly no coincidence everyone of them is bald. (I know money is where you find it).
I already know the rappers that wouldn't play because either their in jail or dead a shared fate of those who were once major players in the civil rights movements, militant or otherwise are no longer among us. Today we have a different kind of activism, they're called players for the money, Calvin butts, Charley Rangel's, David Dinkin, Al Sharpen. There isn't enough space for them all, and why these people have made themselves the voice of black people ( not my voice).
This woman who was fire for her remarks didn't do anything for the black farmers while she was there anyway (haven said that, to be fair I also realize she probably was powerless), a figure head nothing more. Obama got my vote for a number of reasons, and for a number of reasons he won't get it again. The reason behind the black farmers of color not getting anything yet is because they are not making enough noise to be heard, and the so-called black civil rights organizations are to busy supporting causes that have nothing to do with us (like illegal aliens) who are for the most part responsible for American people of color not having jobs, housing, education, healthcare and everything else I fought in the civil rights movement for. The farmers that are protesting are American citizens but Obama, the media, and the Naacp paying attention to the illegal aliens who are not citizens protesting for rights they have no right to.
I remember the Mexican, Chinese wouldn't serve us in their restaurants so as not to offend and keep their white customers... We are always helping other's instead of ourselves.
I would like to be a farmer and grow Organic foods (a billion dollar industry) on my land I own in a 99% predominately white area of New York but can't because I do not have the financial resources to do so.
So - called blacks with money set up these foundations that are so convoluted and full of catch - 22's you stand a better chance of getting money from a white supremacist.
The so-called intellectuals black stay hidden, and those blacks who are out in front like the entertainers, and athletes, are the same when giving (nothing). it's all about the tax rebate!
The name of my farm " forty acres & two mules " I'm short two mules therefore can use a silent partner or benefactor with 1.7 million seed money for my Equine & Organic agricultural farm project. ( They say the only thing certain in life is death and taxes, but here is one more, you will always have to eat).
