A woman in Apex, N.C., had just taken delivery of two Domino's pizzas when her 10-year-old niece pointed out the words "N**GER" and "DON'T TIP" at the bottom of the receipt.
Not exactly thrilled with this level of customer disservice, she complained to the Domino's, and the driver was subsequently given the boot. Which might explain why she's now received over a dozen threatening phone calls.
Says the customer:
"They were saying basically the same stuff that was on the receipt. They were saying 'N-this, you got me fired. You did this, you did that,' just being real ugly to me, just being real mean... I'm thinking it is 2010, it's never good to do that. You can't do stuff like that anymore."
This is very interesting considering the fact that Dr. Laura recently tried to explain away how harmless the N-word is today. It may seem benign to some, but it is still frequently used by people seeking to emotionally and in some cases physically harm African Americans. No, America is not post-race at all, if African Americans can still be flagrantly disrespected as customers in this way, by even a Domino's pizza delivery boy.
Certainly Domino's is not totally responsible as a company for the racist word on a receipt delivered to one customer. But we have to ask what kind of employee training practices are in place at Domino's if this former employee felt comfortable doing such a thing? The question then becomes, whose responsibility is it to address the continuing racial prejudice in this country, and its effects? Do corporations like Domino's have a responsibility to train workers on how to deal with workplace frustrations and issues they may have with the many different types of people they come into contact with?
It would make sense for companies like Domino's to take the lead on educating people on how to deal with race differences. More than any other area of American life, workplaces are a melting pot of different nationalities, races, genders, sexual orientations and ethnicities. When you throw direct customer service into the mix, a whole new level of patience and understanding is required. To the company's credit, a Domino's representative has stated:
"I'm horrified this occurred. This was the action of a lone individual and it does not reflect my views. Upon learning of the incident, the General Manager of the store fired the responsible person immediately. I have reached out to the customer and offered my sincere apology."
But is saying "we're sorry" enough? Now that Domino's has exposed this African American woman to hateful racists who are making physical threats, is Domino's going to be there to protect her if the situation takes a turn for the worst? If Domino's had better screening and training practices, perhaps this African American woman would never have been insulted by seeing "N*GGER DON'T TIP" on her receipt -- and she would not be worrying for her safety today.

What's up with these bbw not tipping...always reinforcing the stereotypes. And the more money they make, the more they demand and expect-and still they won't tip! If you can't afford to tip do take-out or pick up ya own da* pizza. She needs to be joggin' to domino's anyways.

Hey tony2ton you really are as stupid as you seem? If the Neanderthal had a problem with the black lady not tipping him he should have been intelligent enough to suggest it to his boss because no where in his employment paperwork does anything say he HAS to be tipped by anyone! If it did then I am sure that Dominos would have added it into the pizza charge. And as far as bbw? You sound like a big greasy gray boy who can't reach his own azz when it needs wiping lol

Even though in a world where racism still rears its ugly head, unfortunately its the way of the world. However, I feel that lashing out a customer because of her racial background is DEFINITELY NOT EXCEPTABLE. As a black woman myself, I'm proud to be a black woman, and as someone who has previously worked as a server I did experience the reality of receiving poor tips from black ppl....and from OTHER RACIAL GROUPS AS WELL. Being completely honest, I've gotten worst tips from whites and indians then any other racial groups, mostly whites and surprisingly, I've gotten my best tips from black ppl. I know how big the stereotype of black ppl being poor tippers is known and as a habit, workers in the hospitality industry set low expectations for black customers, but giving awful tips is not a black thing, its a ppl thing. You have to learn to know what an exceptable tip is and how to show appreciation for good service.

Thank you Brittany. That was very well put, not excluding stereotypes. I guess we should not believe all we hear. I tip depending on where I am. I include the tip in the credit card and in cash. My tipping is more now than when I was unemployed. I also have a tip card to show me how much I should tip. All this is a personal thing for me and what I can afford. Mostly I tip because of the service I receive, poor service, poor tip, however sometimes I just leave a tip because its the thing to do.

I will say as a black gay man living in Germany I am glad I do not have to be confronted by that ridiculous word. It is not a term of endearment which I have had to point out too African Americans too often.

I visited and lived in Europe and Germany in the 70s and mid 90s. It was NOT a racist experience. As a whole they were very friendly and accommodating. A little distrustful at times, maybe Curious? Definitely! Were there those who harbored prejudice and racism against me? I guarantee there were and you can find it anywhere. But was it paranoid, juvenile, cowardly racism like you can find here where they like to do it behind your back rather than to your face?? No way. It's amazing that places where you can hardly find any blacks are so less racist than areas where we're in abundance.
