Only one in four young black men graduates from high school in Detroit. The rest are lost and left out, swallowed by a city where urban blight, industrial desertion, and educational failure define daily life. Detroit is ground zero, exemplifying the absolute worst of urban life.
Dr. Malveaux goes on to highlight the problems that are caused in our communities by decaying schools and poor investment in urban infrastructure. She mentions that President Obama was quick to support the automakers in Detroit, yet there are quite a few urban citizens of the city who have yet to feel relief:
Government has intervened for Detroit, bailing out General Motors (now Government Motors) to the tune of billions of dollars. The bailout has yet to trickle down. Instead, we have seen schools closed, hours curtailed, and a man who is more bureaucrat than educator placed in charge of that city's educational system.
Dr. Malveaux makes excellent points in her article, in which she highlights the connection between education, economics and politics. Detroit represents the recession on steroids: whatever the rest of America is going through, Detroit citizens are experiencing it at a level that most of us can only imagine. I find it interesting that the White House has incredibly sympathy for the suffering of middle class families, but doesn't magnify that sympathy for those in Detroit and other decaying urban centers across America like Gary, Milwaukee and Cleveland. This is not to say that the president doesn't care about what's happening there, but we must keep relative suffering in perspective. While most of us are alarmed over 9.5 percent unemployment, Detroit is a place where 16.5 percent of its citizens are without jobs.
Many prominent black scholars have recommended that the Obama Administration pursue policies designed to target the stimulus package toward communities that have been hardest hit by the recession. Thus far, existing plans to boost the economy have passed over black and urban areas. I also get the feeling that long after the recession is over, we'll still have unemployment rates exceeding that which have most Americans screaming in pain right now. The American recession is really the Great Black Depression.

OMG. I hope the proceeds of the concerts by Jay-Z and Emminem in Detroit and New York will relieve some of the immediate prssure. Thank you Ms. Malveaux for your concern and strength to speak out on this tragedy.

Feed a man a fish you feed him for a day.
Teach that man to fish THEN "make him go fishing" guess what happens? That man rarely dies, and interestingly learns he HAS TO feed himself. A weird side effect is he actually starts to develop some self pride and respect. If you're not physically or mentally incompetent you have no excuse. Buying on credit knowing you can't keep up with the payments...Puhleeeeaase!
People...get off your butts, get a job and some self-respect. Don't settle for government hand-outs. The mis-guided (but well-intended) socialist stimulus package has done a fair share of damage to this country. You cannot continue to borrow your way out of debt while giving people hand-outs intended to be a helping hand. God help this country and the President of the united States of America.

Ms. Malveaux and her cronies Cornel West, and Tavis Smiley continue to hate on our President. Shouldn't someone with a doctorate degree, be able to figure out the downfall of the automobile industry would have a direct correlation to the economic troubles in Detroit? Mr. Watkins , and the before mention don't miss an opportunity to knock President Obama. Get a life!!!! I guess you won't be happy until you deliver the White House to Sara Palin and her crew.

Don't you understand that it is the same money elite, who obama represents, that brought down the automobile industry. Whose interest was it to build the big suv? Could it be the insurance industry who want to reduce their risk by having people drive around in large vehicles that will lessen their chance of injury or death in an accident? Could it be big oil who want us to buy more gasoline? Why is it a sin to concern yourself with the poor and unconnected?

Tell me where are these jobs, you keep telling blacks and poor folks to go get? I am tired of hearing, Why don't they get a job! Tell everyone where they jobs are, so they can go get them. In case U don't read the news, Unemployment rates are 10% of the population...and triple that for blacks and other minorities. If a white person can not find a job, surely minorities can not get one. So stop this nonsense about "THEY" should go get a job....there are no JOBS. If U know where the jobs are, post them here so all unemployed persons can go and apply.

I was told at my high school reunions by the auto workers I knew in high school that the reason detroit auto industry faltered in detroit was the the auto workers sabotaged the cars on the line with bottles hidden deep in the cars and that the dealers could not find the problem. This resulted in toyota and honda dominating and the detroit car companies moving outofstate any truth to this???

Wow. I love Dr. Malveaux, Dr. Boyce, Dr. West, and Tavis, these are our great minds and voices. But give me a break. This is not all on president Obama. He is doing his part. We have to start doing our part. Techtown is doing their part in the D. Politicans in Michigan have to do their part and help with taxes that attract companies to the area. With the schools, parents, kids and teachers all have to do their parts to make sure that kids are getting their education. President Obama can give billions of dollars to schools. But if some kids don't want to learn and parents are not stressing education, that is money that is going down the drain. It is not all on our presidents black or white. We as african americans have to start doing our part.
