Black men have to make a firm decision to define ourselves in a way that is going to lead to positive and productive outcomes. Many of us are already doing this, and some of us still have to find a way to begin. The capacity to embrace education and economic empowerment lies within our reach. This is not rocket science unless we choose to make it into that.

To discuss this issue, I brought together a panel to talk about the topic of black male mentorship. While the two men I am speaking with serve as mentors in their own communities, all able-bodied black men with something to teach should take the time to mentor as many children as they possibly can. When it's all said and done, it will certainly make all the difference.

The image of the black male is as diverse as that of any other culture, and the capacity to embrace education and economic empowerment lies within our reach. This is not rocket science unless we choose to make it into that. Basic life skill are not lacking with black people. It appears you have ingratiated yourself in the paternalistic system against the race of blacks.

Peace Family:
Dr. Boyce is on point with this one. The "Million Man March" should be an everyday activity to strategically advance the good cause of Spiritual, Educational, Economic, Medical/Health, Social & Political upliftment of Black People. Remeber to murder jealousy as that fella' seems to be our greates obstacle. Here are some books every brother should buy for himself and another brother to start on an "each one teach one" upliftment project:
1. Message to the Blackman in America by Elijah Muhammad
2. Visions for Black men by Naim Akbar
3. Supreme 120 for the Nation of Gods & Earths
4. A Message of Inspiration to the Youth of the Black Nation by Marques Jalil
5. Food for Thought by Marques Jalil
6. Marcus Garvey: His Word, Works & Wisdom w/ a Foreword by Martin Luther King Jr. by TDOSW
7. An Economic Blueprint for Black America by Elijah Muhammad
8. Race Matters by Dr. Cornell West
9. Powernomics by Claude Anderson PHD
10. The Bible
These titles make a wonderful starting point for a mentoring program or study group. Start one today brothers and get busy.
All of these titles can be found at Amazon.com
Peace!

Peace and wow !!! RBG4Life,sounds like a great idea. I would love to do it for real.
In the city of dayton, ohio a % of black males are lost. Either they are stuck on this criminal, outdated thug type behavior. Trying to hide behind religion supposely letting god solve
their issues. Also, wrapped up and brainwashed
into all this downlow,homosexual behavior.
Overall,it's big disgrace. From my own personal
experience a % of these guys would not listen to me. They would be to busy being caught up in the nightmare of this current paradigm shift.
All this focusing on crime,drugs,entertainment,and
religion is a joke and waste of time.
It can't be to complicated to figure out.
I was at the first Million Man March and glad I went. All these black men stuck in a time warp and living under this outdated slave type paradigm
need to wake up and read book's by.

Dr, Boyce after seeing you recently on CNN with Roland Martin, I noticed that you checked him in a subtle way and you gained more respect from me for doing just that! Remember the shutup if you don't vote comment he made. But back to the Topic at hand, I noticed that the majority of Americans wanted integration and diversity but none of you ever speak to the people who expect solutions to their problems from a cultural position that relates directly to them. What I mean in short is the term African American is to broad of a term and doesn't represent all of the kemetic sub cultures here nor abroad. This is one reason that young men don't listen nor trust many of their so called leaders because the people must elect you as their leader not a mere appointment by those who are viewed as the enemy. See every year, we give birth to more subcultures that formulate new groups and organizations that continue to divide us. Now I don't claim to be "Wild E Coyete" super genius but with and IQ of 159 and many experiences I have been known to know a few things that impact us in dynamic ways. Before one can set up a real mentoring program that will meet the needs of all youth we must first acknowledge all of the sub cultures. It may sound good but in reality no Islamic couple wants a christian mentor, no bourgeis couple wants a ghetto mentor, not born Black American wants a African citizen, etc. Yes there are those of you who will attempt to speak on exceptions to the rule here. These are the people who don't overstand how there is strength in numbers nor do they comprehend the trickle down impact from the decisions of others.Promoting and accepting this so called diversity has broken us up into more pieces than before. After reading some of your information Dr. Boyce, I made the assumption that you are a caring man from a darker hue group who doesn't show passion in his writing to only self promote his earning opportunities and capacity. This is a major trend now that fills the blogwaves. Self righteous ego-statistical fools always blog issues and never have any logical solutions. Speaking on solutions, I am only 46 and in my short time on this planet I have seen information spoken on in this era the same as the information passed to us in the 60s and 70s. The problem has never been the messenger or the message but the focus of the people. The messengers have been strong for we have made religions and organized groups from many of them. We have revisited their most famous words but most of us haven't come close to comprehending what it was they was attempting to get across to the masses. Notice even in the posts how messages from different backgrounds are posted (see post by supreme wisdom). You cant expect to seriously bring a group of people together with several different philosophies. In reality this doesn't happen only on front street!
I have endured the pain of the cross so let it be that I may be vessel to remove the anguish from my people and replace the symbol of death with the ankh of life.

I'm sorry. I cannot believe this is even a question. Obviously, there is a breakdown some where with our black men. It is so very necessary for all men, even young men raised by women only households to have TRUSTED mentors in their life and the line must be drawn as to what is a mentor and what is not. Many young people do not have a value system, fear of God, standards or respect. Many want to be hard and rough and trust me you are talking to an educated young lady who grew up in the hood and worked her way out. I said many, and not all. Someone must educate them and instill in them not only values but our great black history. Many of the young men ladies at 6-10 years or age, or should I say boys and girls do not even know who Malcom X is or Martin Luther King. That is absolutely crazy to me. Yes, young men, boys need TRUSTED mentors. That does not mean spend the night,or going on away trips. There are ways this can be done without all of that to protect our children.

I feel that the welfare system totally destroyed and finished breaking down the black family along with slavery. Although, many of us deny the after effects that slavery has had on the black man, which is the beginning. Having a man in the household is very, very significant, although the majority of black people did not grow up in a two parent home. It really does create balance and respect. I do feel that we need to take our kids back by disciplining them, instilling the fear of God and also giving them as much love and attention as possible, and let's not forget protecting them, which I feel is downplayed so very much. We really need to give a lot of love and support to our black men. They have such a hard time dealing with the outside world that they don't need to come home all the time to craziness, which I have been guilty of many of times, which often times does lead them to go to other races.
I just wish that we could all support and respect one another in every way. If my husband goes and spends time with a child from a single parent home, I should not have to worry that she is going to try to sleep with him. It should be that much respect. It shouldn't be that if my husband is mentoring a child, that he should not be able to discipline him. We must take a stand with these youth. We are losing way too many. The ones getting killing and the ones doing the killing, not to mention the ones that are turning gay or losing their mind due to molestation or rape.
Let's stop being afraid and walk by faith and when we see those young, black men walking around with their pants down or with hair hanging everywhere, instead of ignoring it or being afraid, we must start to speak to them and encourage them that God wants them to do better.
