Americans Don't Know Obama Has Helped the Economy

President Obama
A recent Bloomberg poll shows that most Americans know very little about recent economic activity in the U.S.

For example, the average citizen doesn't realize that:

- The Obama administration has cut taxes for middle-class Americans,
- The government expects to earn a profit on the Wall Street bailout money; and
- The economy has grown for more than a year.

In truth, though, President Obama has cut taxes by $240 billion since taking office in January 2009. That $700 billion financial rescue package for banks and Wall Street firms will net the government a tidy return on taxpayers' money. And the economy has actually expanded for the past five consecutive quarters.

I'm not surprised that those interviewed for a national Bloomberg Poll aren't seeing the big picture. It's tough to think about the gross domestic product and economic output when your job may be threatened (or perhaps you're already out of work), you're struggling to pay your mortgage (or maybe you're already in foreclosure), and you're watching your investments slowly dwindle (that is, if there's anything left at all in your battered 401(k) plan).

But let's not portray Americans as dopes. The average U.S. voter isn't going to be concerned with broader economic statistics and outcomes. They want to know -- rightfully so -- when their own personal economy is going to be on the mend.

Unfortunately, the results of this Bloomberg poll turned into bad news for the Democrats in the midterm elections.
