"I've seen his movies. I was a really big fan. But he lost respect from me," said Shenel Gunnis told the New York Daily News. "You're not supposed to be promoting stuff like that in areas that can barely afford food."
I don't trust what the New York Daily News or any other media outlet has to say about esteemed African American figures, but I have to give some honest thoughts about Spike Lee's decision to associate himself with Absolut. One has to wonder how Lee can participate in such an endeavor, yet heavily criticize fellow filmmakers like Tyler Perry for allegedly engaging in buffoonish theatrical pursuits. Lee challenged Perry for producing a virtual minstrel show, consisting of a black man in a dress, and other unseemly characters behaving in ways that some would define to be stereotypical. But there's nothing more stereotypical than a black man with a bottle of liquor in his hands. Spike may want to consider his commitment to Absolut the next time he speaks up to condemn another black filmmaker for encouraging our community's self-destruction.
I happen to be in New York City this week shooting our MSN special, 'The Invested Life.' One of the members of the production team was a young brother from Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn. When I mentioned Spike's Vodka deal, he immediately knew what I was talking about. He also reminded me that Spike had chastised Eddie Murphy for his creation of the television show, 'The PJs,' which featured black people in the projects. He seemed to be a huge fan of Spike Lee, but was incredibly disappointed. I am especially saddened by this after seeing a study that determined that alcohol is more devastating to a community than crack, heroine or any other kind of drug. This deal is simply not cool.
Perhaps Spike needs to explain. Spike would be better off helping the rest of us to understand why working with a company to sell Vodka to black people is not as bad as Tyler Perry making comedies with poor taste. I am a fan of Spike's, and I want to believe that there's a difference. But the truth is that there may be no explanation other than the obvious: everybody's got bills to pay.
Spike is no different from the rest of black Hollywood, many of whom must find opportunities wherever they can. One major difference between Spike Lee and Tyler Perry is that while Spike has to wait for someone to green light his films, Tyler waits for almost no one. Additionally, Tyler has created jobs for countless black directors, producers, actors and crew members, which liberates them from having to sell Vodka to black people in order to pay ends meet. So, as Spike decides to continue criticizing Perry, he should not be surprised if Perry strikes right back.

I am not one to attack Spike Lee for doing what he's got to do. I just hope he reconsiders his decision to attack other people for doing the exact same thing. I certainly say this out of love for Spike and I wish him continued success. Well, success without the Vodka, I can't agree with that one.

He made a huge profit from the victims of Hurricane Katrina by making that documentary...ask the people of New Orleans did they see a DIME of that movie? He says a ton of money went to "various non profit organizations"...yeah, like the people hired to help him make the movie.
Spike Lee is the ULTIMATE sell out, he seems to be "disgusted" with anything that he didn't help create or didn't make money off of.
He even went so far as to sue 'SPIKE TV', for using "his name"....please don't flatter yourself, Spike, that station was NOT thinking of you when they named it trust me on that.
Green is not a pretty color on him,
but hey, if he thinks he can make money buy 'investing' in something that is a large part of those communities that he is so 'disgusted' by (i.e. The PJ's) then go for it.
Once a sell out, always a sell out.

So are you saying it's okay for African Americans to spend millions of dollars on liquor, but not make any profit from it? Get real. Since we consume a lot of alcohol, we should at least own a few companies or in Spike Lee's case, invest in it.

The very people that are complaining about Spike's involvement with the Vodka company, are the very ones that will go out on week-ends and drink.

Shut up Rhonda, if thats even your real name. You could be some poser using the most black name you can think of off the top of your head. You obviously missed the whole point. The purpose is underlying deeply in fact, thats the problem the fact that black people are spending millions on alcohol so our celebrity leaders should do something to prevent that from happening not sit back with a IT AINT BOTHERING ME look on there face and profit off of it. You should be ashamed of your lack of comprehension to REAL black issues that even a TEENAGER can recognize.

NO. "Americans" spend millions on alcohol not just Black people. And just consuming alcohol doesnt make people alcoholics. Lots of people consume alcohol at dinner, social gaterings, etc. Stop making a big deal out of nothing.

Quote from article: "I've seen his movies. I was a really big fan. But he lost respect from me," said Shenel Gunnis told the New York Daily News. "You're not supposed to be promoting stuff like that in areas that can barely afford food."
Diddy sells alcohol in those areas, Jay-Z sells alcohol in those areas and many more rap & hip hop artists push alcohol and many other products to ripoff your dollars and teens are mad at Spike Lee but won't get pissed at the ones that they admire and buy CD's from.
Teenagers are so naive, don't know jack shit, gullible, spoiled and full of bullshit. They need to get off their fat, calorie eating, low self esteem, out of shape, Twitter, Facebook and their "huddled in their bedrooms/basements", chat room asses, go outside of their bedrooms, walk around (you might discover exercise) and try to understand the real world and how it works.
Everything you wear, everything you listen too, the expensive cell phone that you begs your parents for (with that high ass cell phone bill your parents can't afford and you don't want to work a summer job), the computer that you can't seem to let go of and all those video games of all types that you waste your time playing (instead of studying and preparing yourself for higher education)should not be your main priority but education should be your main priority and not what some successful grown man (who has earned the right to) does with his decisions and investments.
When you grow some hair around your privates, be responsible, stop sucking your mamma's tit(and begging daddy for everything if you happen to have one) and get a job and make some money to buy things instead of leeching and making your parents miserable, then you can make grown up comments....until that time comes, children..
STFU!!
