It has been reported that Geoffrey Canada, head of the Harlem Children's Zone, was the first choice to become Chancellor of the New York City Public Schools. Canada is well-respected for championing the cause of educating children from urban communities who've had their futures continuously sabotaged by public school systems across America.
Mayor Bloomberg has made things more difficult for himself by keeping the selection process secret. He hasn't disclosed the candidates who were considered, nor laid out clear criteria on which he based his decision. This has led to an uproar from some in the community who feel that their children were sold out in the process. James Mtume, an activist and radio show host, feels that the appointment of Black was about money. According to Mtume, "Black was appointed primarily because she is from the business community and can facilitate the contracts that allow the education system to be the new corporate cash cow."
Mtume is also not convinced that Canada was seriously considered for the position in the first place. "The news about Canada didn't come out until there was a community uproar about there not being a black or brown person considered for the job," he said. "You don't make the announcement four weeks later, after the heat is on, you tell people these things up front."
Geoffrey Canada would have had a great deal to offer as the head of New York City Schools. He holds a Masters Degree from Harvard University and takes an approach to education that involves mentorship from birth all the way through the day the child enters college. In my book, "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about College," I advocate for a similar approach, given that the entire village must work overtime in order for us to see the tremendous value that education provides in the lives of our children.
Canada is now 58-years-old, far from being at the end of his life's work. While he would have been a solid choice for Chancellor, he would have surely been criticized himself for being such a strong advocate of charter schools. Additionally, he loves to fire bad teachers, which doesn't sit well with unions who sometimes seem more concerned about protecting their jobs than protecting the lives of our youth. So, in other words, Canada would be a less-than-ideal candidate for the same reasons as Dr. Boyce Watkins (no, you'll never see me nominated as the head of any school district; I don't work hard to keep political friends, and I have an intense inability to tolerate B.S. for long periods of time. Life is too short for that).
One thing that's clear about the state of our public schools in New York City and across the country is that it's going to take tough, bold, no-nonsense leadership to make things right. With escalating drop-out rates for black and brown children, we must literally go to war with systems and individuals that are seeking to destroy the lives of our youth. While it might seem dramatic to tear down systems that undermine our kids' ability to be educated, one only needs to realize what's at stake: A child who remains uneducated is far more likely to spend their life in jails and prison, to be unemployed, or even be a victim of homicide (the leading cause of death for young black men, who are consistently at the bottom of nearly every measure of educational success). Given that the direct impact of missing education can be death, we must be willing to put everything on the line in order to save lives. There's no excuse for accepting the status quo.

Mr. Canada is the perfect choice to head up the NYC school system. He cannot be chosen because the status quo in the system would have been disrupted. The money that is directed towards education of ny jews in private schools would be exposed. can you please tell me how it is possible that nearly every jewish orthodox student, from elementary thru HS/college is able to go to private school despite their economic status? Meanwhile, nyc has the worst graduation rates among black boys/men in the united states. bloomberg is part of what is wrong in america. he is a racist pig who does not give a damn about the black/brown people of nyc. he is an arrogant MF. nyc is so, so racist. it is worst than most southern states in this miserable country. bloomberg is not to be respected by the people of nyc. he paid off the council who gave him another term in office against the will of the people of nyc who said, NO, you cannot have another term in office. nyc used to have the best education system in america before the jews took it over. we need a revolution. this is BS. AND no, I don't blame the union. what happened to the fiscal equity money that was won in the lawsuit? they don't want to see minorities educated in nyc. that money is being spent on educating jews and being sent to israel.

Mr. Canada would be an excellent choice for the job, but would he be afforded the control of the system as he has over his present position. What would become of the Harlem Project? If you look at the history of education of this country as it pertains to people of color, you will see that whenever there is a hugh success on the part of children of color, the game rules seem to change. If Mr. Canada goes to head the NYC school system, what becomes of the Harlem Project. What becomes of the beautiful black minds that are being fed those things needed to become productive individuals in our cruel society. The people of color in this country are under attack from those citizens who want to return to the old Jim Crow and segregated way of life. We need to continue to train our youth to counter these sentiments; to be aware of the antics that confront us; to overcome those seeds of doubt and insecurities bred into our race through years of hate and servitude due to the instructions of Willie Lynch. Education is the key to freedom. Even the Bible teaches that "the people perish for the lack of knowledge".
We are still at war with the white man when it comes to education...if you don't believe it, stop dreaming and look at the way our president has been and is being treated. We know all of these hateful acts are due to one thing...the American society is not ready for a Black leader. If they are not ready for one, what will they do with a complete society of educated Blacks. We also know that the "man" will stop at nothing to bring about our demise...so I am asking Mr. Canada to please be aware of what will happen to his beautiful plan to save the Black children of Harlem. You have been planting seeds that will produce a beautiful crop who will in turn, re-seed when they become old enough to sow a new crop. The beauty of the Harlem Project is that it is not connected to the public school system and all of its rules, regulations, teacher unions, and pitfalls. I am convinced there are other capable individuals who would do an excellent job leading the NYC school system out of their problems. WHY DO THEY NEED MR. CANADA? He has a career...an outstanding career grooming and educating Black youth to become strong thinkers, and unfearing law abiding citizens of this country. Does anyone wonder why it is being suggested that Mr. Canada was being considered for the job.........God bless you Mr. Canada....keep up the good work, and please stay put.............Our future generations need you!
