While I feel that I have some understanding of Chuck D., I simply cannot say the same for Flavor Flav. Flav almost seems to come out of a different time, place, and perhaps even another planet from the rest of us. He would have been great in the 1920s, when black performers could make a fortune by embracing ignorant stereotypes and engaging in ridiculous behavior. Flav seems to relish his role as the cultural clown, reminding all of us of exactly what Dr. Martin Luther King did not want our children to become.
Well, it was no surprise to the world when Flavor Flav continued his tradition of "interesting" behavior by announcing that he was planning to open up a chain of fried chicken and rib joints across America. The first location has opened, in Iowa of all places, just this week. He is also planning to offer (surprise!) La Flav's Spirits, a chain of flavored liquor. There's no better way to feed a black stereotype than to serve it both fried chicken and liquor.
To some extent, Flavor Flav is actually a victim. In a world where political correctness is valued and appreciated by most of us and America is trying to heal from a racist past, it has become almost illegal for men like Flavor Flav to express themselves the same way the white guys do. There are idiots on the MTV show "Jackass" who do ridiculous things, but they arent' accused of undermining their entire race in the process. Flavor Flav is often criticized for doing his own thing.
But while most of us can understand that Flavor Flav is not the first guy to make a fool out of himself on TV, we must also realize that whites have the luxury of having a diversity of images presented in mainstream media. On one channel, you might see Jack Black doing something ridiculous, but on the next channel, one can see Wolf Blitzer doing something intelligent. It's not that being silly is wrong, it's that the media tends to shine the spotlight on the black guy who's embarrassing himself the most. CNN Financial's decision to highlight Flavor Flav instead of the thousands of other intelligent and capable black businessmen across America is a case-in-point, reminding us that society has created a role for black men as entertainers, athletes and criminals, which is a typecast from which we have yet to escape.
Overall, I hope Flavor Flav sells a lot of chicken (I love fried chicken, so yes, even I fulfill some stereotypes). I do not, however, want him to sell very much liquor (we've got enough of that in our community). I also hope that perhaps one day, rappers can realize that there are more productive ways to make money and contribute to our people than to give them more liquor, clothes and greasy food. The day of the liquor/chicken/clothing/drug selling rapper is just a little played out and it's time to move to the new millenneum.

you know people are going to say and believe what they want. I am a black single retired served in the mlitary and worked for the federal government. I had the privilege of seeing public enemy in Muchen(thats Munich in Germany) and it was the best concert I saw, featuring the best hype man of all time Flava Flav. And he's still doing the same thing he's always done being his own hype man for himself. I don't know flav personally, but what I am seeing from him is he's still working and it's not out of ignorane or stupidty.(lol) He is an educated man who has found his niche! And I applaud him. Yes he has his flamboyant style, but isn't that what sets you apart from the rest? Creating longevity? How many hype men are still around today with at least twenty years under their belts???????? Don't worry I'll wait. I will say this... I have tasted flav's wings seasoned with his spice mixture he concoted and is being sold out of Mama Cimino's here in las vegas and they are great!!!! They sell lots of his wings and they are not in the hood!!! And these are $.99 wings that is not cheap(after midnight) Hooters has to sell their wings for $.25. For those of you who think this venture of flav's is a joke then think again... Kayane opened 10 restaurants all at one time...They all failed at one tme. Flav has been testing his product before he opened his first store to his chain, in an area where property is at a reasonable price. Who seems to be more senseable?? Seems to me Flav is running in the fore front of his game. Keep doing you flav, I love your wings they are seasoned just right, not too salty like other places and going to Mama Cimino' s you get that family oriented feeling... So don't hate on what you don't know or have not experienced. Yeeaahh Booooyyyyy!!! Lol

I agree with Dr. Watkins! We don't need any more negative stereotype of the Black race, and we certainly could do without the liquor, pawn shops and payday advance places. Our children need as many positive, educational and progressive associations as possible.I think it is even safe to say that hip-hop has done its' thing in the way of a kind of musical expression, but we certainly did not need the baggy pants, the vulgarity, immorality, and the thugism. It is a new place and time, and they are all pointing to us to reach for a higher horizon for bigger and better things for us and our children;less we place ourselves into a much deeper cultural depression than the present financial and economic one has us in.

We find a lot of Blacks making negative comments about the Black "Sterotype" as some of us pretend to be on TV, and other places. However, with these Racist Conservatives gaining a greater foothold in American Society as they are doing lately, Blacks had better start finding what ever nitch they can to support themselves. and their families.
Equal Employment opportunity Enforcement have been put on the back burner for some time, and that's why we have the gap between White and Black employment getting larger, and not even the President is concerned about the problem.
So Blacks have to stop worring about how things look, and be concerned about whether they can put food on the table, especially if it's legal, since going to jail or getting killed is self defeating.

I think because the good doctor doesn't care for Flav personally, he is showing his bias in this article. Recently Jay Z was in the news investing in a chicken restaurant and he sells liquor, but he didn't get this ridicule from anyone. But Dr. Watkins sees him as a good business man and more likeable. Besides all the chicken franchises that we all eat at were started and owned by white men. I'm sure all the major liquor companies are white owned as well.
