Many of us are familiar with author Terrie Williams and her popular book 'Black Pain: It Just Looks Like We're Not Hurting.' I decided to bring Terrie back into the studio last month to discuss the black community's denial when it comes to dealing with mental illness, specifically when it comes to managing the spike in depression during the holiday season.
The video was shot before the holidays, but was delayed due to production problems. But there will always be a holiday season around the corner, and so will depression. With Valentine's Day coming up, depression in our community might once again become acute.
The video is below, enjoy!

I didn't read the article but I do have an opinion about depression and black people. I'm always an optimistic thinker about my own abilities so even though thing around me may be rough, I don't get depressed about them, which sounds like a sadness that can't be overcome.
Unfortunately, I think people with less understanding in general, would be the people who are depressed (people in 20s, 30s ). Now if someone survived a murder attempt (being doused with acid) - then I understand the depression.
But youngsters sulking and being unruly in class for example, is a sign of very poor parenting. The kid probably isn't even eating properly cause his 30 yo guardian is a lousy cook. He hears rap blasting all day and lots of profanity. I'm not saying it's 100% but it's a significant %.
And lastly, if someone has the "organic" depression (if such a thing is to be believed), then medications might help. I just think adults should know there'll be ups and there'll downs - but I always get back up, so why fret?

You all calmed down now Bruce? You were bout to bust a gasket there. And btw, why embarass yourself and post such nonsense. And you're illiterate (based on your post) and couldn't understand even if you wanted to. I'd have to teach you first.
But make no mistake about it, you're incorrect on your facts and your statement amounts to nonsense. Your comment is one of a guy spewing his emotions and making no logical sense.

"...DEpressed...OPpressed." Rightttt or is it 'Right On'!?
As soon as the third largest majority (those that consider themselves African-Americans)in the United States (according to the 2000 census) stop repeating the mantra: "If it's 'White', it ain't right", and act/vote to rid themselves of the Democratic political forces that have overseen all major 'Black Ghettos' in the United States for the past 10 to 60 years (think South Side of Chicago)'OPpression/DEpression' will subside. Today, 90% of Blacks vote Democratic - how politically stupid is that? Keep it up and 'Entitlement Slavery' will continue to cause 'DEpression/OPpression'!

We remain in denial about depression because of not wanting to face some truths.
I like for black males the misinformation has been that depression is a sign of weakness.
I have my good days and bad days over time I have fought with it taking medication is the pits because it leaves me drowsy. But support group have helped for me.
People who need people are so luck!
If it was not for me talking more about it I think it would be much worst.

@Michael...uub140 and Bruce are both the DEVIL in sheep clothing. They are white trash who come to BV spewing their racist bullcrap while assuming the black identity. They don't get out of their trailer park often so we allow them to come here. UUb sounds like someone who is on her way out of this world anyway, so I will not bother to say anything negative to her.

A lot of blacks say to pray and hand out scriptures to family members and loved ones who are suffering. That works temporarily for believers. The longer term solution I believe is exercise, self-improvement and good employment.
