Obama to Chamber of Commerce

His usual charm in tow, President Obama went to the Chamber of Commerce on Monday with an olive branch, and a call to action for America's business leaders. Pledging to help create an environment where businesses can innovate, grow and succeed - by upgrading transportation and communication networks, investing in education, and adjusting the tax code and the regulatory system - the president urged business leaders to "get in the game," and meet their responsibilities in helping the economy recover:

"And if there's a reason you don't share my confidence, if there's a reason you don't believe that this is the time to get off the sidelines –- to hire and to invest -– I want to know about it. I want to fix it," Obama said. (The New York Times)


Citing trillions of dollars being held in reserves by American companies, the president said that now is the time for businesses to invest in America. "Ultimately," he said, "winning the future is not just about what the government can do to help you succeed. It's about what you can do to help America succeed." Unsurprisingly, reactions to the president's speech varied.

Only time will tell what comes of this address, and how it will affect the African-American community, whose unemployment rate still looms at 15.7%.
