From The Business Insider:
Mayor Dave Bing is trying to save Detroit by offering incentives to lure residents back to abandoned neighborhoods.
One program offers $150,000 in housing renovation money and requiring only $1,000 down to police officers who are willing to relocate to the city. Another offers college graduates $2,500 to rent and $20,000 forgivable loans to buy properties.
Potential home buyers can choose from plenty of cheap or free homes, especially in the blighted neighborhoods of Woodward Ave. and Brush Park.

When my parents immigrated to New York from the Caribbean they initially stayed with my grandparents who were already here. When they set out to buy their own places my parents discovered that houses in the Bronx (which was an absolute hell hole at the time) could be had for a dollar. Of course, since it was such a hell hole they turned up their noses and he instead fixed up an abandoned building in queens. (Long story short, they wanted to move into a white neighborhood, people refused, they decided to buy an abandoned building in the area and move in anyway).
The buildings in the Bronx that they turned their noses up at are now worth millions of dollars and there is no way they can afford them now. They missed out on the Bronx wagon but they were able to take advantage of the housing boom in Philadelphia a couple years back. One house they have they bought for 20K in a neighborhood that was plain horrible. It is now worth over 100K and still growing as the area is in the process of changing as more college students and young professionals move in to the area.
The moral of the story is, what Detroit is now doesn't have to be Detroit forever. And those few people who are willing to take a risk on a "hell hole" will most certainly be rewarded when the city picks up again.

inticing, but what good would it do to move to detroit if you won't have a job. maybe they should build a bunch of retirement communities since retirees have a a steady income and most don't need jobs....wait a minute, i'm on to something. how about nice, affordable retirement communities and casinos, heavily policed of course. some new shopping centers and other things old people like. then not only could you bring in the older fixed income people, but people to work in hospitality, the stores etc. remember, old people are the key. maybe michigan can be the black retirement mecca like florida is for old jewish people. the only thing it gets very cold in the winter i've heard, but if you're in your warm cozy senior living apartment home with all the amenities, who cares. your welcome detroit.

Hey kalisweetpotatoes,
I think you have a great idea! How about making two major streets the indoor shopping center with houses, condos and apartments connected,so our elderly would not have go out into the no/cold or suffer in the heat.
Add walkways like LAX airport, indoor kiddy park for grandchildren, movie, playhouse culture and medical center, fashion shows for the elderly etc.
The mall would need a very strong roof to hold the ice and snow for the Detroit winters,or heaters on the rooftop to melt the snow.
-Just imagine 34th Street in NYC indoors from the East to West side and Park Ave in NYC indoors from North to South. It would be a wonderful crossroad in th middle of the city.-OPEN 24/7. This property value would be high. It would bring people to the city thus, the city could make money in many ways.
I know his sounds wild and crazy but most innovative ideas do. The city could make money; public parking, taxes ,tolls etc.It could host events for tourist as well. This would be a coolplace in the summer as well.

THESE OFFER DONT MAKE IT ATTRACTIVE TO MOVE TO THE CITY THE REASON WHY IT IS A STRUGGLING CITY BECAUSE THE JOBS ARE NOT THERE ANYMORE IT MAKE NO SENSE TO BUY A HOME IN A CITY WHERE THERE ARE NO OPPORTUNITIES FOR EMPLOYMENT. FOR ME TO MOVE TO THE CITY IT WOULD definitely HAVE TO BE EMPLOYMENT OPPERTUNIES EXCELLENT SCHOOL SYSTEM AND ECONIMIC GROWTH.I DONT THINK IT IS UNFAIR THAT COLLEGE GRADS ARE PREFFERED BECUASE THEY ARE LESS LIKLEY TO HAVE THESE NEIGBORHOOD TO BE PROVERTY STRICKEN. YOU WILL NOT HAVE A DRUG AND CRIME RAMPAND AREA. IF YOU DONT HAVE THESE REQUIRMENTS THAN YOUR GAMBLING ON THESE NEIGBORHOODS GOING BACK TO THE SAME OLD SAME OLD

Become an entrepreneur and make your own job. Learning web design, html/css, computer science/programming can be had for free all over the net. Use the money that you make from your business to finance your children's education.
Essentially this is what Detroit wants, people who have the motivation, intelligence and skills to make their own money and bring business to the area, not rely on other people and services to be successful. They want pioneers!

I think cities like Detroit and others need new blood to run these cities. Many of the old ideas are out date hype! Sadly, innovation from entprenures isn't supported by most of city officals.
We have so many brillant minds in America that are being wasted.Especially, in the areas of tecnology, the arts, medcine, food culture etc.
The Blue Collar industries/culture is not enough for cities such
as:Detroit,Pittsburg,Milwalkee,Youngston,Gary,
Flint,Cleveland,Fort Wyane, Springfield,St. Louis even Chicago etc to make it!-These cities have been below poverty or decades. Many people merely exist in these cities with little hope or dream beyond winning lotto and getting drunk,or a childish sports games.Americans have mutured beyond these social norms.
Many of this midwestern and southern cities have not changed with the times. Many people from these areas move out because their skills and education are not needed at home. How many collage grads do you know were force to move away from their hometown because their hometown had no jobs for them that paid enough money for them to live without worry of job security, good pay and decent schools, homes and soild communities and strong-decent families?
New ideas and think tanks ar needed. Many local entprenures have wonderful projects, inventions, programs and job opportunites but get very little help from city, state nor government.
The entprenures and inventors must give back to their cities, state and government at the same time.By supporting the next generation to be innovative.

I think incentives should include opportunities toward struggling families, poverty stricken families and single parents.....They rarely get opportunities to "start over".
I think employment growth and fun things to do in the area are necessary to draw in more people.

It seems that very too many city and state leaders are lost and have no vision from the Lord.-Vision comes from God.If it is to bless the people.

They couldn't pay me 2 live in Detroit. I have relatives there, and I have visited there many times. It's ok for a short visit; but 2 live there I don't think so. It's not my kind of town!!
