Russell Simmons believes in today's world you have to have plastic. In fact, the iconic hip-hop mogul envisioned everyone in the country "to have access to the American Dream" with the creation of his RushCard. However for Simmons, his pre-paid Visa card has recently faced scrutiny from the Florida Attorney General's Office, claiming the card may be forcing consumers to pay hidden fees each time they make a purchase.
According to a press release issued by the Florida Attorney General's, subpoenas were issued against five prepaid card companies including First Data Corporation, Green Dot Corporation, Account Now, Inc., Netspend Corporation, and Unirush Financial Services, LLC (makers of Simmons' RushCard) for "possible deceptive and unfair practices."
"Failing to disclose fees is essentially stealing money from consumers," said Attorney General Bondi. "We will aggressively investigate these practices and ensure that Floridians are protected from hidden fees and charges."
The complaints also state that the companies servicing prepaid debit cards often fail to disclose numerous fees in their advertising. Claiming in some instances, every transaction a consumer makes using a prepaid debit card may be subject to a hidden fee.
"I completely welcome any and all debate, discussion and understanding about the best companies in the prepaid debit card industry, which my RushCard company helped found," the Def Jam Records founder responded in a statement. "The RushCard is extremely transparent in terms of the presentation of its fees and its services. All of the information is available for everyone to see on rushcard.com."
To Simmons' credit, the advertising for his RushCard is very transparent in its messaging. After watching 20 seconds of the check card's commercial (see below) it was made clear that no credit check is needed, everyone is eligible to sign-up, and no bank account is needed. Adding that some fees and restrictions "may" apply.
"As a leader in this industry, I encourage a full understanding of RushCard's transparent pricing, and valuable services, especially for those who have been turned away or let down by traditional banks," he clarified. "RushCard is the solution for people who want affordable financial services that they can customize to suit their needs ...I welcome the public debate because the more educated the consumers are the more successful we become."
Much like traditional debit cards, prepaid debit cards can be used wherever major credit cards are accepted. Leaving consumers to spend only what they have deposit.

What took so long! BET airs the Rushcard commercial like all the time so I decided to read into it. This is a great example of how its not in your best interest to get something just because it has an african-american face on and it airs on tv! period.com I read all the charges involved its a wonder anyone would fall for it. I immediately thought how this black man is exploiting black people, esp. those who are truly in need of financial help and directions. We need to empower our children with some basics on financial, open an bank account and get a debit card -- its free. Such a distaste to what he's done I no longer watch The Kimore Simmons show.

I never heard of this card until my sis needed money. All the drama with this thing I ended up wiring her the money. Sadly I didn't know her credit was so bad she didn't have a bank account. This is where the famous take advantage of the poor.
I read the Kardashians cancelled their contract after Suze Orman tore into them for ripping kids off. What happened with Usher's card?
My youngest (just grad college) is great with money (I watch Suze Orman and read Black Enterprise). I've boosted her credit score she gets more cc offers than me now. hahahaa

You are missing the point. The Rush Card is for consumers who for some reason or another are excluded from using banks and credit unions. They probably have some credit issues and the traditional services are not available to them. While I am not familair with the fees charged I would say a potential customer has to decide whether the service is right for them.

This is why the Kardashians pulled out of their ads for this type of card. Some can't open an account with a bank or keep one open so the next best thing is to get a reloadable pre-paid card where you can have your checks directly deposited to. I don't have his card but I worked with someone who did. She got the pretty pink kimore card. It was cute to her but I asked her did it charge everytime she swipped, checked her balance or have monthly charges. she didn't know until we looked at her paper and found all of the fees. she later canceled her card. I wont say blacks but anyone going through a hard time financially these days will look at this as helping them get on their feet. Not going through the banks if credit is bad or having to stand in a long line to cash a payroll check. Just always read the fine print.

Because blacks are the only people who have hard times these days huh...and just putting the statement 'i won't say blacks' is pretty much saying blacks...you're statement is ignorant and so are you...oh, and just for the record I worked in a bank for 5 years and hispanics are the lowest percentage of owning a bank account not 'blacks'

The bible says "my people perish because the lack of knowledge"! Hosea 4:6 we must read the fine print! And then make a conscious decision if this is the best choice.

This reminds me of blacks and the mortagage scandal, first it was "YOU WON'T FINANCE ME BECAUSE I'M BLACK!!", then it became "WHY'D YOU LET ME BORROW ALL THIS MONEY THAT I NOW CAN'T PAY BACK NOR RESEARCHED BEFOREHAND!!!"

With all due respect, this might be a reality in your world, but more than Blacks were hurt by the mortgage debacle.
I see a lot of non-blacks losing their homes to foreclosure.
With friends and family members in the real estate, housing, mortgage industry, we saw what happened and to whom, and we refused to do business with "shady" individuals. In fact, some of my friends and family actually left their businesses because of the shams and scams.
Enough said!
